I wasn't about to pay $220 for a decent size kief box I could sift my trimmings with so I made one, here's what came out:

The top and base are made from a composite hardwood luan 1/4" the rest of the box was made out of spare base molding I had lying around the garage and some door stop trim. the screen is bridal viel material found at jo ann fabrics or michaels or anywhere that sells fabric. you can even get the ultra clearance rack for $.99/yd. with some rediculous pattern on it but it wont matter since you can cut the screen size you need and ditch the pink polka dot print on the other half of it. I rubbed a 1/4 pound of trimmings through it and got 13.3g of kief. I don't know if this is good or not since this is the first time I've made kief in any decent quantity but it sure is fun scooping out mounds of kief to put on top of bowls :) I highly recommend building one. You need a mitre saw or really strong arms and a mitre box. Wood glue. Painter's tape to tape all the corners after you glue them. super glue with spray on instant set. if there is any interest I'll make another one and give you guys a step by step on it.

I was looking at various kief boxes to buy today since I'm not sure how to make anything like that on my own. Anyway, I saw two kinds.. one with the sit-in glass bottom and one with a slide-out bottom. Any suggestions on which is better? I thought the slide-out one might be kinda iffy as some spillage might occur? I dunno.

wow you guys thank you so much for the compliments!

I wanted to make a table size kief box so I will make a DIY guide on that this weekend.

some people inquired about how much the building materials cost, I would say under $10 if you already have the tape and glue, otherwise it would be about $15 in materials cost.

if there was enough interest I would consider making oversized kief boxes for a modest fee. what's nice is that you can go huge and it really doesn't increase the labor or materials cost since the same amount of mitre joints are present no matter what size you make unless you wanted some custom kief box shaped like a star or something.

from my brief experience with kief boxes I would say the enclose glass bottom is the way to go. I quickly realized you want to keep the box as air tight as possible cause that kief sure likes to fly around when you get a good amount down there. a glass tray would introduce a open vent directly to the kief and it would no doubt get dust and hair on it.

As far as cost, How long does it take to make one? How much do you feel your time is worth?

$15+ whatever you feel you need for labor Plus shipping. Don't rip people off and you'll sell quite a few im sure, Throw some on ebay, Guarantee you'll sell some

thanks hilltop, it takes about 1-2 hours of my time to build one, does $70 sound fair? I'm just comparing the prices to my local grow store that sells them for $220 for the same size box.

Competitively around 50 bucks. I'm sure if you set out to build like 5 at once, it would be faster per box, since you could do all the cuts at once.
here's the thing though, that box you linked is half the size of mine. i've noticed that I haven't been able to find any boxes larger than mine, i think that in itself adds value to it. it seriously wouldn't be worth my time charging $50 per box since I make more working for a living. it's hard competing against the big guys heh.
