Ph in soil certainly DOES matter!!! BUT, it's not as critical as in a hydro set-up. You can get nute lock-out in soil just like in Hydroponics, but soil is much more forgiving of such things.
He's at 7.0-7.5. I wouldn't particularly sweat 7.0 too bad, but 7.5 definitely needs adjusting. I'm just surprised that his nutes don't make the soil more acidic on their own because generally in soil you encounter the exact opposite problem (ie. soil becomes too acidic over time).
