Aeration in hydro question?

I am starting a new grow after being out for a bit and my question is this, do we really need air pumps? I know everyone uses air pumps in their aero and deep water setups, however, as the water is churned through the pump, sprayed on the roots, and falls back down into the reservoir, doesn't that aerate the water enough? Also, I am so happy to see FDD back on this site! He is a wealth of information and one helluva nice guy!

Aerating nute solution increases DO given your temps in the rez are low enough. Its not bubbles in the water but the agitation the bubbles cause at the surface that increases DO. Anything I suppose that agitates the surface enough will suffice I suppose. If there is enough water falling back onto the rez it should be fine. If not get a pump and air stones.

Confuses me too. I had root rot in DWC and switched them to Aero without extra bubbles. They have grown new healthy roots and will get to a harvest. I don't have any recommendations but will look here to see if people can input with knowledge :/

I use a flood and drain type setup and do not use any air. My setup produces enough DO by waterfall effect and flooming in main rez. I drilled a small hole in the discharge nozzle of the pump that shoots a stream of water towards the surface. I found air stones screwed with the PH a bit.
