It wouldn't really be considered lost. In the case of a stock it cannot go bankrupt and as long as you hold it, it's not a loss. Long term investment hard assets are best hold of value. Short term the market always fluctuates.

I weighed myself the other day for the first time in a month. The only thing I changed was my diet since I got home. Cut out the majority of processed foods and dairy. Without any significant weight loss routine I've lost about 5 pounds in the last month and a half.
