    Not matting.

It can. I saw a grower - I think in the EU - growing in like 12" square plastic pipe. He used mats with good effect. There is no reason why mats wouldnt work in smaller pipes/tubes, but they are not really needed unless they are BIG tubes. The OP didnt provide ANY system details - which is why...

    Not matting.

There is a big difference between pipe/tube NFT systems and tray/table systems. In pipe/tube systems the roots are confined to a narrow space and mats are not needed. In the tray systems there is space for the roots to spread out wide - but they wont do it as well without the mat.

Not enough information. What system? What matting? Pics?

Regarding grow container size & root mass...

I dont currently do DWC. Im an AA aero guy, but there is a reason for the gap. The hydroton can stay too wet if the bottom of the net pot is touching the water. That can cause root issues in some cases, but its mainly a question of O2 levels. The hydroton will stay at just about the perfect...

    Increasing root oxygenation indecision

No, they can absorb O2 directly from the air as well. The trick is to NOT let the roots dry out. If you are aerating your rez, and not pushing too much water thru the system, then you are about as good as it gets unless you flood the tube with O2. NFT's special thing that sets it above...

    Youngsters grow

That sucks man. My cat jumped in my tent and ate a 2" tall Mephisto baby before I could grab her. Most expensive seeds I ever bought too. The one survivor turned out to be one of the worst plants I ever grew, so Im not mad at her any more :)

why is my ph in dwc always going down so much?

Same here. I dont think its that hard. If the plants look pale, especially yellow, then it probably too low. If the plants are really dark green, or especially burning, then its too hi. It only takes a couple of days to see changes usually.

why is my ph in dwc always going down so much?

If it was the air stones/aeration causing the CO2 changes, then levels would stabilize at equilibrium levels within 12-24 hours at most. So after the first day, there should be very little to no drift due to changing CO2 levels. It wouldnt start up again until after the next rez change. I dont...

    Ph and Watering

No. It needs to be the same all through the grow - from about 5.5 to 6.1 or so with the target being around 5.8 as an average. Let the plant tell you what it wants. You can tell if its no getting enough water - the stems will get soft and bendy and drooping leaves. In theory, you want to...

Regarding grow container size & root mass...

From what Ive seen, the main thing if you want larger plant is longer veg times. The longer you veg, the larger the plants will get AND the more time the root mass has to grow. That in turn means you need more space for the roots to grow into. I filled a 56 gallon root chamber with the roots...

    Youngsters grow

Looks good, but that 3/4" wide area with the raised nubs between the foil and the outer edges on the yellow lids will let light in. Id cover that part with alum foil. Cover the recessed parts too. Its been my experience that you really do need to be fanatical about zero light getting to the...

    Youngsters grow

You're off to a good start! You might want to cover those yellow lids with foil or panda film. They dont block light that well and you could get algae/bacterial growth.

    PerfectPH gives away free device

You must have some amazing water ;) I found an industrial supplier that was willing to sell samples for 'testing' purposes. I forget, but I think I paid like $40 for 20 grams? I cant remember for sure and cant find the link any more. The problem was the powder they sent me was so fine - like...

HPA DIY first system question/ newbie

You should do some tests before you go hog wild buying fans and heaters. Id suggest you set up a pot inside a foam box, then run your nozzles on a 1 sec ON x 60 sec OFF cycle for maybe 30 minutes while measuring temps inside the chamber. Id keep the probe about 6" down from the top about half...

HPA DIY first system question/ newbie

My heater is in the space between the foam and the fabric pots, so its heating the area just outside the fabric pot. I have a small personal heater Im using. I was using a tiny 750 watt heater but I switched it out for a slightly larger 1500 watt model because I needed the smaller one for inside...

    PerfectPH gives away free device

I bought a single $7 container of battery acid 4 years ago, and its maybe 1/2 used, so I spend $7 for about 8 years of PH down. I also bought a $15 two pound bottle of potassium hydroxide flakes that I mix up for PH UP. I used about 1/20th of the bottle to make one gallon of PH UP, and Ive still...

HPA DIY first system question/ newbie

The main fault I can see is they switch to a default setting of 34.5C/94F if they loose power. That would be bad for the roots.. Other than that, the reviews look ok. They are 1/4 the price of the basic inkbird...

    should I quit this girls??----rootrot

I just had a thought. You said your water temps were down in the mid 60's - but what are the temps in the root chamber? Does the water have time to warm up or it the air temp inside higher by chance? Im reaching for anything now.... EDIT: Thought #2 - light pollution. I was just going over...

    should I quit this girls??----rootrot

It looks like adding the mycorrhiza hasnt helped any. Which calmag? Some have organic components and/or add ons. Other than that, I dont know why the rot started. All your other specs seem fine. Maybe you just got unlucky or accidentally transferred some contaminant at some point. I happen to...
