You don't want it to dry out at all, just not bee over saturated and cause moisture stress.

Your res temps are a bit too warm, try running a watering schedule like 1 min on 4 min off. This will help to ensure your pump isn't heating up your nutes while keeping things properly moist and not overwatering. I used to run my AF60 just like this and would give me some stellar results.

Are your water temps high? I've read that high temps lead to pathogens which will cause unstable PH. Are you keeping water aerated? The same thing can apply.

I like soil moms over hydro moms as soil is much easier to work with for this purpose and growth rate on soil isn't too fast creating monsters in weeks. You can use bonsai techniques on soil moms as well and I've heard of people having soil moms up to years in moderate sized containers...

What kind of times does everyone see on rooting? I had used some H202 for the first time in my cloner, got some white slime and it made me wonder if the h202 is a problem. Gonna try some straight tap water to see how that works next go round.
