There's tiny bugs ALL over my cooking soil!!!

No, to get the peat hydrated for the first time. Dry peat actually repels water, but once wet absorbes quite readily. Think dry mop vs moist mop. I only use soap as a surfacent (?), not for bugs. Wet

There's tiny bugs ALL over my cooking soil!!!

But of course. BTW, I use a bit of soap when hydrating a fresh mix (peat based), and it doesn't hurt a thing. Ivory used to be the old standard, but Dawn seems to be the new favorite. No anti-bacterial of course and only a few drops per gallon, enough to break the surface tension of the water...

There's tiny bugs ALL over my cooking soil!!!

Trust me, they belong there and don't go fucking up your soil trying to kill them. They will go away, or at least reduce in numbers when all that fresh food gets more broken down. Wet

Vermicomposters Unite! Official Worm Farmers Thread

GGJ ... Use 2 - 1/4" screens, slightly offset, 1 on top of the other. Nothing larger than 1/4" and the majority slightly smaller. Much, MUCH easier than trying to source 3/16" screen. Small tie wraps work well to hold them in place Wet

Vermicomposters Unite! Official Worm Farmers Thread

You STILL haven't added drainage holes!? I remember telling you they were a must, or, you can learn from painful experience., your call. Please quit trying to kill beneficial bugs in the bin, it hurts the worms and damages the entire ecosystem of the bin. A handful of neem cake every couple of...

    @pappybear here u go

Uh, no. Biochar is good for aeration and a home for microbes. Pretty much zero NPK value, being pure carbon (basically charcoal). Wet

    Gro-Kashi & Gage Green Probiotics

Yeah, the Azomite is funny when you consider the Al in deodorants that gets used every day or so. Worry about Al releasing in a pH that would kill the plant first and then go and schmere a bunch in the pits. Makes perfect sense. LOL Wet

vermiculture and used unorganicly fertilized soil

The Pro Mix that comes from Premier the peat people? I use Premier peat moss and no experience with PM, but always thought it was peat based. That and the Sunshine mixes. I'm confused. Wet

    Probiotic Farming

Well I mainly got the wheat bran and the EM-1 because the first 50# combo lasted close to 5 years and wanted to duplicate that, mainly for the worms. Not ALL of the homemade got forgotten and yes, it works great. Wet

IDK, could be. No experience with that particular 'blend'. I went with the EM-1 for this because I have a bad habit of getting rice wash & stuff together and then totally forgetting about it, then remembering way later, usually by smell. LOL Yeah, what GGJ described is all there is to it. Try...

You did right with that approach and BAS is wonderful in that regard. I've ordered from them several times to check stuff out, neem/karanja being the prime example. Worked so well I bought in bulk from neem resources. It takes time. Some things it took literally years to locate. I'm in a very...

Blue Mountain Organics - How do I know if they are still good?

You answered your own question with the best course of action. No experience with BMO, but my WAG (Wild Ass Guess), is that they are probably still good. Wet

    Probiotic Farming

For worm bins, most have had a 'Meh' experience with liquid Bokashi/EM-1. The stuff is just so damn acidic. However, Bokashi BRAN works like a champ and I use it all the time. Think of it as bokashi in a dried form, but without the 3.2 pH of the liquid. I'll add my food (coffee grounds and/or...

Boy, you stepped in it now. I want to do some oysters in straw this spring and am now waiting for my copy of "Mycellium Running" to arrive. I have it as a PDF, but prefer real books. It shipped 2 days ago, so the questions won't be long in coming. LOL Wet

Quick question, what region of the US are you in, growing zone? The 'money issues' thing is kinda BS if you are passing up locally sourced equivalents and paying big $$$ to ship *designer* amendments. Pretty much, stuff like Oyster shell flour, fish meal (any type), crab/crustacean meal, etc...

Where should I have my ph?

It can get technical, but yes, it is a 'soiless' mix because there is no soil/dirt in it. Just about ALL bagged mixes are soiless mixes. Like FFOF, Roots, Sunshine, whatever. *Top soil* is usually soil, but if it's peat based, it's actually soiless ... technically. I've always made my own peat...

    Re-using FFOF after synthetic nutes

Listen to "Shark Boy" here (Loved RD in that movie so many years ago). Saved me a bunch of typing as there isn't much I could add. I have also reused mix after Jack's Classic with same results. The #1 thing you can do for your garden is start a worm bin. There is simply no way to stress that...
