You could get a Raspberry pi and control via bluetooth; connect to Rpi with wifi. Using the Rpi will let you control everything from lights to watering etc. I recommend using Mycodo. The developer is awesome and i'm sure he would through together a library for the hoist. That my limited 2 cents.

Dig a vertical channel and fill it with your amendments mixed with compost.

I say make the EWC right in the pot. I've been experimenting with composting directly in the pot like a small plot of land. My compost piles are small of course but the worm activity is amazing. I have yet to plant in one of my compost piles but I will keep everyone updated!

I always say in nature plants don't get anything aerated besides the soil. I feed my plants exclusively fermented teas, which is basically just comfrey in water. I strain the solids and plop it on my soil. The worms love it. You can also ferment rosemary, etc as a spray for bugs.

I don't see any reason using it immediately. If your soil is healthy you shouldn't have problems! To be on the safe side you can put it through a worm bin, adds more microbes too.
