I put mine on a bed of pea gravel. Kinda mimics bedrock and if I water compost teas it will collect in the bottom to be sucked up by the pot over a few hours.

I get lost watching the life in my soil! My new hobby is waking up before lights on so I can watch the worms retreat to their burrows. It's fascinating.

I like the coverage of the strips as well as the ability to run them without a heat fan combo. I am constantly worried my fans will fail and my house will burn down. And when my plants get big they grow into the damn things and burn. Not my style. I want my plants happy!

Do you have worms actively at the top? I can't get worms to thrive in the SIPS like the good ol smart pot.

Thats your problem. Your aeration breaks down. I do not advocate using rice hulls at all for that reason. However, as a worm compost aeration rice hulls can't be beat! Get some pea gravel, turface, or more lava rock. Your problem will magically disappear!
