You can certainly keep them in that 3gal ,, do some root pruning whe you transplant It works great to free up the roots,, it feels wrong cutting some of your roots but it is actualy really good for them when they get rootbound,, youl have no problem , it doesnt even stunt them in my experience

1 plant can cover 2x2 but with t5's as lighting it would take like 2monts at least of veg ,,, t5 would be best suited for 4 plants per sq foot if you want to cut down on veg time
