Introducing CobKits.com - specializing in DIY and Citizen COBs

About to start wiring my light together. How do you recommend connecting the wires to the driver and power cord? Trying to avoid soldering. Would twisting a 1in length of wire together with heat shrink be adequate? I don't want to solder it and find out I messed something up. Will run it with...

Finished building my frame for my COB setup. Going to install the COBs onto the heatsinks tomorrow, maaaaaybe wire it up, and I'll show pictures. It's a really simple frame made from 1/8th inch thick 90 degree angle Aluminum from Home Depot.

Finally have everything I need to start building. Working on the frame first, everything should be downhill from there. Man, .125 thick aluminum is not easy to cut by hand with a hacksaw!

    What's a simple soil recipe?

I plan on getting Fox farm ocean forest, and adding perlite for the first 2 weeks. When I transplant, I want to transplant into a nutrient rich soil. What should I add to the ocean forest? I'm thinking: Worm castings Bone meal Dolomite Lime Any thoughts on what else to add? Would be nice if I...

Anyone else try something like this or have any words of wisdom before I attempt this? Just going to splice into the female ends, solder and wrap in heatsink or electrical tape.

I haven't assembled my own setup yet so I can't tell you from experience, however I don't see the pin fins getting too hot. Long as you have good air circulation in your grow room, and heatsinks are enough for your light, you should be fine.

Smaller COBs for sure. Citi 1212's, or CXM22s and run them real soft. Probably about 700-1000ma depending how many you want to buy, and what heatsink you would want to use.

I'll look into those. Would this be cleaner and easier? I would connect the female ends to each driver and plug into the wall? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B8OG51O/ref=mp_s_a_1_40?ie=UTF8&qid=1485969005&sr=8-40&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=2+outlet+power+cable

Ahhh, I think this just complicated my setup. Is a junction box just an enclosure to house the wires? Could you point one to me that would work my situation? I just want to combine the drivers to plug into a single outlet.

Good to hear. Last thing. 3 prong power cord. Is it easy enough to just solder leads from both drivers into a single 3 prong power cord? Do I need to worry about a certain gauge wire, or should I just wire both separately with their own own cord?

Perfect! Not sure why it was so hard for me to find, ordered. How does this Potentiometer look? Little more than the usual ones, but it looks more heavy duty and nice. Using to hook up 2 drivers to each other, so 50k it is. Going to make this look nice, hopefully...

Do the drivers themselves have to be hooked up to each other, or just wire both drivers to the 50k potentiometer? Currently plan on having the drivers wired separately, each driver to their respective 3 COBs each

If there is enough demand for old cobs, I'm sure it'll happen. I myself wouldn't ever consider something already considered obsolete. I'm looking for efficiency to save in the long term. I waited weeks for the CXM22 to be in stock over the Citi cobs. They're cheaper and work just as well. Not...

It's a lot easier to stock one part, especially when you have to order minimum order quantities. You stock parts that you guarantee you can sell, or if you know they won't become obsolete. COBs are constantly changing. More risk.

Great video on how to make the frame. I have 2 drivers, anyway to hook up a single potentiometer to control both drivers at the same time and a single 3 prong outlet so that the whole unit acts as a single light? Would be nice to have 1 plug and 1 cord. I will take many pictures when I get...
