To keep the water cold add ice cube handful by handful, as long as you have a few ice cube floating your water is cold enough. Shaved ice or snow work well.

No disrespect intended from my side either but you are most certainly not maximizing the process of sieving by your experiment. The reason behind freezing escape me as well. You should actually try to agitate your trims without ice but using ice cold water and you will avoid all the grinding ice...
