    Three enough?

If lighting up a full 4x4 space with boards or strips you will want 400 watts minimum during flower. 400 watts puts you at 25 watts per square foot. You can get by with less light during veg. If going with qb288's 4 would be the way to go. The samsung strips mounted to aluminum rails are also...

Good value lights for a 1st timer?

Not sure where you are, but if he is unsure he will grow for long enough to justify buying a $200 or more light, a used hid setup from craigslist may be the ticket. Tons of guys getting rid if hid lights by the droves here. They sell for for $40-100. Option B. (don't shoot me) A Chinese...

    Back at it!

The amendments you are adding to the soil need some time to break down in the soil to become useful to your plants. Your soil will need to be moist during the cooking (composting) process. If you want easy as pie, grab a bag of Fox Farms ocean forest or happy frog. Both are fairly cheap...

To nute or not to nute. That is the question.

Many auto strains do not gobble up nutes like photo period plants. If your plants look good now, you may want to wait a week, add just a little, and watch them to see how they react. The little bit of plant we can see in the pic you posted looks great btw. :)
