it sounds like the ignitor is toast thats why the mh works but not the hps.... hps have to use an ignitor to fire up the lamp thats why you can use mh in hps ballast but not the other way around.... have you ever seen the switchable ballast that have the hps/mh switch??? all that does is turn...

generally you want a 400 to be about 18 inches from the top of the plant.... move it down to a foot if you have an air cooled hood

go with a 600.... thats really about the lowest you want to go in that size area... you could use a 1000 since you have enough height but 600's are my favorite light.... after your first successfull crop its like a sickness..... more more more ya know.... next thing you know you will have 600's...

first off forget what timsatx1 said..... waiting untill they show a defficency is a great way to lower harvest and fuck up your plants depending whats defficent.... as for soiless lets say its sunshine mix#4 it has no nutes really so you need to start feeding once the plant has a few leaves on...

my favorite at the moment is this sour diesel i am on my secong crop with... very strong stone, smelly as all hell and a heavy yielder somewhat.... however it is a long flowering strain... the chemdog looks great also... a friend on mine did a batch of that sometime ago and it was killer
