A semi-auto-only gun of any shape or style, even if it it 99.99% congruent with a mil-issue AR but lacks the select-fire provision, is not an assault rifle.

It is an assault weapon however, since that term is redundant. The thing done with a weapon is assault. Armaments not used as weapons andor for assault are classed "armor".
