When I was in the Army we essentially policed ourselves. If the group as a whole thought an individual was out of line and working against the group we had what is known as a blanket party. To the uninitiated, late at night this was a group of guys that put bars of soap in their socks, surrounded the said individual's bunk, covered the individuals head with their blanket, held him down and commenced to beat the fuck out of him. The next day it was obvious what happened. But he didn't work against the group again and was pretty docile. He had no idea who beat him and no incriminating bruised or cut hands. It would appear this is what happened to the doc. The group gave him a blanket party.

So now you say that is enough. Well so be it but it is also important you saw it for what it was.

LOL yes but it was happening long before Full Metal Jacket. First time I saw it was in basic training. I was on the top bunk and "Dr Bob" was on the bottom bunk. As you might imagine it created quite a ruckus. With the bunk flying all over I was afraid I would fall into the flailing socks of death. lol

Phone Books and Steel rods are really used as well if the party wants to do internal damage with no external bruising .. My father told me a barrack story once about a fuckhead that almost killed him and his platoon . The entire platoon put him out of commission as once they finished with him he was permanently disabled due to that midnight beating .

Oh the things I learnt growing up on military bases as a Gi Brat , they serve me well today and are priceless ..

Of course lol. Out of sound asleep would be fucked. BUT I remember from the soaps breaking apart, it did make the whole room smell like fucking lavender the rest of the night. I slept in a nice warm aromatherapy coma and woke up refreshed, happy and ready to start the day.
