Anyone using CMH bulbs?!?

I'm not sure how long ago these bulbs have came on the market but I'm highly surprised that no one in the medical growing feild nor the hydro stores knows a damn thing about them. I read about them 6 months ago and just recently ordered a 250w CMH bulb. I'd swear that the plants seem to be growing faster than under the 250w MH but I don't have a side by side comparison. There isnt' much on the forums about them, but what is posted is all positive. If they are soo good why wouldn't the hydro stores stock them or know about their exsitence. I called and looked around everywhere and each time I got a, "Huh! let me look it up...we can order it for you."

So I'd like the educated growers to come out of the woodwork and post pictures or your personal experiences with the bulbs!

I almost did. But I opted for the 600 instead. I think 600 HPS and a 400w CMH would be about the ultimate. Bad for the eyes and skin though.

I use a 400 watt CMH bulbs in each of my 2' X 3' flowering cabinets and for my 4' X 5' flowering closet I have two cooled/sealed 400 watt HPS and an open air 400 watt cmh in between them. (1200 watts total in closet)

Fuckers are just copying me.
I made my own CMH years ago.
MH in the middle surrounded by 2700 K cfl's.
That's what my new power center controls.

If only they came in mens sizes...

A friend of mine swears by CMH bulbs. He runs 3 400w bulbs, two HPS and one CMH and swears that no mater which of his 3 hoods he puts the CMH bulb in the plants grow towards it.

wow....Xpensive! did that say $834? I bet that is why everyone isn't using them. GD and if you got to repplace them anually like most HID
(I do it every 6 months) then that is why I don't use them!

My 1000 watt 3300 K color MH costs about $30 for a new lamp.
I'm pretty sure it would cost me more than that to replace my sidelight CFL's.
I have 28 of the 2700 K color 24 to 27 watters in my array at present.
Need to build one or two more CFL reflectors before I call it quits.:-P

That's $834 for a pack of 6 bulbs, about $140 each. If you're replacing bulbs every 6 months you're throwing your money away. I've used bulbs for 3 years+ without any sacrifice in yield or quality.

Those are for MH ballast only?

Found this tidbit at horticultural source:

Which lamp is best for your growing needs?
METAL HALIDE LAMPS - This type of light is blue-orientated in the spectrum. It is the best type of light to be used as a primary light source (if no or little natural sunlight is available). This type of lamp promotes plant growth.
HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM LAMPS - These lamps are red/orange in the spectrum. They are the best lamps available for secondary or supplementary lighting (used in conjunction with natural sunlight). This type of light promotes flowering / budding in plants. It is ideal for Greenhouses / Commercial growing applications.

JeromeT thanks for the input. Have you noticed much difference since using the cmh in the tents?

I would love the room to be able to string 3 lights in a row with a cmh in the middle! In the future, I'd want 2 600w hps with the 400 cmh in the center. Until then I'm going to order the 400w cmh and play around a bit.

My bad on the 6 pack, maybe worth a try. As for the bulb replacement you can use them for more then 6 months but you're not getting what you think on the lumens. Them things fade at about 6 months and more so in flowering where you're constantly firing them up and cooling them down. I'm lazy so I am not going to go through all the stat links and shit but there have been threads....oh there have been threads on here.. to each his own.

I bought a P.A.R meter for the shop, It's great for dialing in your lights and measuring the output of a new bulb vs old bulbs and different brands. We are under current testing. So far, we have concluded.
A piece of glass will only net you a loss of around 10 par
the Badass bulb has the best P.A.R output vs the new lumatek
old bulbs definitely lose P.A.R, just haven't got the answer of how long just yet.
still testing other bulbs for more data.
