It does put out a fair amount of heat. I have mine in a cool tube with an XL reflector and I have a 6" 250cfm fan mounted on one end of the cool tube that vents to the outside. That keeps the temps pretty even in the mid 70's F. I use passive intake as my "tent" is just panda film on a floor to ceiling wood frame.
As for positioning, what seems to work best for me is to keep the light 48" from the floor. As the plants grow taller, I may supercrop or move them to the side to allow them to grow into the light, but any lower than that, and the tender seedlings can't take the heat. I use 1 and 3 gallon root pots so the light is between 40 and 42 inches from the top of the soil. Since I have a somewhat perpetual grow going, I had to find a happy fixed point as the canopy will be ever changing throughout the tent.

My temps in my lil cfl closet grow have been jumping up these past couple days its been 84 degrees outside
My temp jumped up from a high of 79 to 88
And I run my lights at night so I can only image what it would be like if I ran them during the hottest part of the day

Thank you. Good to know I made the right choice. My fan is mounted on the end of the fan drawing air through the cool tube and blowing it out through the duct. Seems to be working well. The temps in the room fluctuate from 69 to 75F depending on the outside temp. In a month or so, I'll be putting a window unit in the room outside the flower room and then it will stay a pretty constant 72.

You definitely need to improve the ventilation in there... That's way too warm, hun. The best way I've found is to set your ventilation to create negative pressure inside. Before I made the intake vents on my room, the fan would literally suck the walls inward from the pressure of removing more air than it could take in. Now that I've stabilized the airflow, all I have to do is keep the outside room adequately cool and the fan will exchange the hot air inside the room with the cooler air outside. The warmer air is then cooled by the window unit and the whole room, inside and outside the grow area stays a relatively constant (+/- 5-10 degrees) temperature.Thanks for the info bliejeans and pheobe

I keep my light 48" from the floor. That seems to adequately accomodate all the plants in there regardless of their individual heights. I currently have 10 girls in my room at everything from 2 weeks old to 2 weeks from harvest. They range from 8" to 25" in height, so with the height of the pot added in, my light is about in the same place as yours. LOL

I now have 10 confirmed females in the flower room and they are staggered two weeks apart so I will harvest 2 plants every two weeks, starting in about 3 weeks. Then, in the veg room, I have five clones growing strong ready to join the flower room as vacancies open up (I am going to limit the flower room to 10). And last night, I started four new fem seeds and I am thinking strongly of popping one of my sets of regulars. The choices are:
3 Psycho Killer
4 Jacks Cleaner 2
5 White Widow
4 Big Bud
2 Moroccan Hash Plant
5 Space Queen (just got these at CannaMaineia, straight from Dynasty Seeds - got a T shirt too!!!)
8 Bubblebomb (Del66666's monster 12/12 strain)
8 48mph - a strain bred by a friend
I will accept any input on any of these, but know in advance that I have real issues with impulse control when it comes to my plants. So I might just pop something anyway... and I might pop your suggestions too! I do LOVE having a nice size, separate veg area. I moved the 72 solo cups of veggies out finally so now I have room to grow some nice size plants before putting them in flower.
This growing stuff is really starting to rock hard here at Grandma's house!!! LOL
Meanwhile: I am working from home today (meaning I can multitask in a much more satisfactory way), awaiting the postman with my Signature Required package of Blue Cheese and Lemon Skunk (half zip of each) from the dispensary. Then I will appropriately toast a few brain cells and drive into the office.

Evening folks... holy COW have I got some stanky Lemon Skunk. I swear, I opened the jar and it burned my nose hairs. Damn, that stuff is fine. Got it from a dispensary that is "gap-filling" for me till my harvest comes in. They have some truly righteous stuff. I'm puffing Lemon Skunk, Dreamworx, and Blue Cheese right now. Each one is simply yummy... But I digress.
