Blue Widow & Sweet Deep Grapefruit 400W Coco Grow (Tropf Blumat)

I had never done a coco grow before so I figured that it wouldn't hurt to use the 2 free dinafem seeds i received a while back, one is blue widow and the other is sweet deep grapefruit. throughout this grow the plant on the left in the pics is the SDG (sweet deep grapefruit) and the plant on the right is the BW (blue widow).
I am using 3 gallon smart pots filled with canna coco. I have the tropf blumat watering system feeding the plants their canna nutes from a 5 gallon elevated reservoir (black 5gal bucket) which is aerated by a ceramic air stone. The only nutes being used are canna A&B and canna rhizotonic. I have seen multiple grows on the forums where people do perfectly fine and achieve some outstanding results from just A&B or A&B + rhizo.
Other than that the only other things goin in my reservoir are a few milliliters of drip clean each time new nutes are added to the reservoir and a few drops of ph down is needed after each new feeding change to bring it down to around 5.9 or 6.0, other than that it's just distilled water and the canna nutes.

so the first photo shows how i started these 2 plants... basically i used a floating foam plug holder in a black tub that had about 2 inches of tap water at the bottom... the foam holder is open on the bottom which allows for water to be wicked up by the medium... under the tub i had a seedling heat mat and covered the top of the floating foam with plastic wrap to keep the humidity in. most people say to let the seeds germ in the dark but i have never followed that rule... i had 4 cfls above these 2 seeds before hey popped.. one 2700 and one 6500 cfl above each of the plants, i didn't take these down until the other day actually... they did a great job at allowing the plants to spread out rather than stretching up towards my MH light which can't be placed an inch from the plant tops like cfl bulbs can.
at the moment i have my 400w air cooled hood sitting at 12 inches above the canopy tops with the metal halide bulb installed and 1 oscillating fan blowing some indirect air over the plants.
in picture 2 and 3 you can see black pen caps next to the stems... that is because both plants had very slight leans to them and I am very picky about having plants that stand perfectly straight.
Picture number 4 shows the blue widow... picture number 5 shows the sweet deep grapefruit.
I have 2 tropf blumat water sensors per pot... only 1 is actually needed and would probably be easier to maintain but i like the idea of having 2 in each pot just in case of a clogged line that stops up one sensor.... the only drawback is that they have to be timed perfectly with each other so that one isn't dripping more nutrient solution than the other one.
also in the pots are these little green frogs that make noise when their probes become dry.... just a little added safety since they are pretty loud if the coco starts to become dry.

well that's about it, hopefully these 2 lovely little plants will turn out to be females. i'll update at least once every week in this journal.
any advice is greatly appreciated!

I've grown sweet deep grapefruit myself, and trust me she's a keeper. perfect stealth plant. you can only smell her when you put your nose up to her or rub a sugar leaf. but she is pure grapefruit goodness.
I've never grown blue widow but I do have a couple seeds to it

So it has been 3 days since the previous photos were taken, the plants have changed quite a bit since then as you can see from the photos.
the sweet deep grapefruit has started to hit the sides of the 3 gallon smart pots on all sides with it's fan leaves.
I thinking that maybe tomorrow morning i will either top both plants or fim them... most likely top.

these 2 plants are using 4 gallons of nutrients per week as of right now so that is just about perfect... the nutrient solution never strays beyond 6.1 and can easily be brought down with just 3 to 4 drops of ph down.... for the most part in an entire week you shouldn't have to touch the ph of the canna solution, the ph buffers in the nutes do a very good job on their own and everything matches up perfectly with their grow guide on the website... can't really ask for much more than that.

Thanks for the input, it's always nice to hear from somebody that has experience with the same strain.
did you get it for free when purchasing other seeds or did you buy a batch of sweet deep grapefruit seeds?

Lookin forward to seein updates as I'm growing SDG currently also!!
awesome, how is the grow going? are you in soil, coco or something else like dwc?

Hi just wondered what the norm is for flushing with a cfl crop grown in coco...flush everyday...once or twice a week..finding it hard to find any hints?? Should i use just water etc...any hints are well appreciated. Here's a few pics...View attachment 1938439View attachment 1938440View attachment 1938441
not really sure man... i am assuming that the last week to 2 weeks with just straight water would be ok... i think that canna recommends using canna boost all the way until the end. i can't give you a for sure answer but i'm sure somebody else will chime in.

Yes my SDG came as a freebie, and she never disappointed me!
haha awesome, i hope that i have the same luck, i'm wishing for two nice females and i have a feeling that i might get lucky enough since dinafem has a pretty good reputation with their seeds being feminized

So i topped the plants yesterday and it doesn't seem to have slowed down the plants growth much. I'll post pics later showing how much more these 2 plants have spread out. as of now the sweet deep grapefruit is doing extremely well.
I also added 4 gallons to the nutrient reservoir yesterday evening since there was only about half a gallon left in it at the time. I ended up adding more nutes than the first batch... the first time the ppm was a little over 400... as of now i have it at about 620... canna's grow guide recommends 650ppm so it should be ok. the ph buffers in canna's nutes are amazing to say the least, they have no trouble keeping the nutrient solution at a steady 5.9 or 6.0 ph so very few adjustments are needed.

above is a pic of the 2 plants from a distance so that you can see how much they have changed over the last few days.

good to know man, thanks for sharing.
i'll be sure to keep an eye on it just in case, as of now it is doing fine and is liking the nutes just as much as the blue widow is... hopefully it stays that way haha.
