I had never done a coco grow before so I figured that it wouldn't hurt to use the 2 free dinafem seeds i received a while back, one is blue widow and the other is sweet deep grapefruit. throughout this grow the plant on the left in the pics is the SDG (sweet deep grapefruit) and the plant on the right is the BW (blue widow).
I am using 3 gallon smart pots filled with canna coco. I have the tropf blumat watering system feeding the plants their canna nutes from a 5 gallon elevated reservoir (black 5gal bucket) which is aerated by a ceramic air stone. The only nutes being used are canna A&B and canna rhizotonic. I have seen multiple grows on the forums where people do perfectly fine and achieve some outstanding results from just A&B or A&B + rhizo.
Other than that the only other things goin in my reservoir are a few milliliters of drip clean each time new nutes are added to the reservoir and a few drops of ph down is needed after each new feeding change to bring it down to around 5.9 or 6.0, other than that it's just distilled water and the canna nutes.
so the first photo shows how i started these 2 plants... basically i used a floating foam plug holder in a black tub that had about 2 inches of tap water at the bottom... the foam holder is open on the bottom which allows for water to be wicked up by the medium... under the tub i had a seedling heat mat and covered the top of the floating foam with plastic wrap to keep the humidity in. most people say to let the seeds germ in the dark but i have never followed that rule... i had 4 cfls above these 2 seeds before hey popped.. one 2700 and one 6500 cfl above each of the plants, i didn't take these down until the other day actually... they did a great job at allowing the plants to spread out rather than stretching up towards my MH light which can't be placed an inch from the plant tops like cfl bulbs can.
at the moment i have my 400w air cooled hood sitting at 12 inches above the canopy tops with the metal halide bulb installed and 1 oscillating fan blowing some indirect air over the plants.
in picture 2 and 3 you can see black pen caps next to the stems... that is because both plants had very slight leans to them and I am very picky about having plants that stand perfectly straight.
Picture number 4 shows the blue widow... picture number 5 shows the sweet deep grapefruit.
I have 2 tropf blumat water sensors per pot... only 1 is actually needed and would probably be easier to maintain but i like the idea of having 2 in each pot just in case of a clogged line that stops up one sensor.... the only drawback is that they have to be timed perfectly with each other so that one isn't dripping more nutrient solution than the other one.
also in the pots are these little green frogs that make noise when their probes become dry.... just a little added safety since they are pretty loud if the coco starts to become dry.
well that's about it, hopefully these 2 lovely little plants will turn out to be females. i'll update at least once every week in this journal.
any advice is greatly appreciated!
