When you consider this:
(1) Schedule I.—
(A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.
(B) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
(C) There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision." [20]
No prescriptions may be written for Schedule I substances, and such substances are subject to production quotas by the DEA.
Under the DEA's interpretation of the CSA, a drug does not necessarily have to have the same abuse potential as heroin or cocaine to merit placement in Schedule I (in fact, cocaine is currently a Schedule II drug due to limited medical use):
When it comes to a drug that is currently listed in schedule I, if it is undisputed that such drug has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and it is further undisputed that the drug has at least some potential for abuse sufficient to warrant control under the CSA, the drug must remain in schedule I. In such circumstances, placement of the drug in schedules II through V would conflict with the CSA since such drug would not meet the criterion of "a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States." 21 USC 812(b).
And then you recognize that the US Health Department owns the patent on medicinal use...

Understand then that the recent crackdown on dispensaries by the DEA, fueled by "illegal" tax exemptions they had claimed on their returns, is all because of the current classification of the plant/drug. Also, many people who are federally prosecuted for cultivation/transportation/sale, etc, of a schedule 1 substance are subject to quick "justice" with severe minimum penalties.

For all this time all these people have been prosecuted, IMHO, illegally given the US Govt's very clear stance on the medicinal uses of cannabinoid compounds. To outlaw a plant and then patent its natural compounds... fubar dude.

They grabbed the patent because they know they fucked up with alcohol. Mj is the next cash cow for the USA and the government will be damned if a bunch of smart socially responsible thinkers make money on it. ( all those descriptions were describing us ) could you imagine if all of us had influence over what our gov did. Holy shit what a difference that would make. There's no way there letting that happen.

I'm with you on the anti-pharma stance BL. Everything that requires a pill could be solved via dietary means, period.

EDIT: except serious pain relievers used for operations and such, I realize.
Clearly you don't understand the severity of certain disorders. Schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, severe dystopia and ADD... Overdiagnosis, overattribution, and excessive use of. Pharmaceuticals are rampant, but your response is itself bipolar. What we seem to need is a greater level of collective reasonimg and community education, and of COURSE a revamped healthcare system (blame Canada?).
Hey, seems I'm getting the hang of my Android Tablet.
It still sucks... I want my money back.

iPhone doesn't have that problem!!! Lol. Big pharma companies should be arrested and giving life sentences. They do not cure they make it so you have to use them for the rest of your life. WTF is that. If I tried that shit I'd get a life sentence with no chance of parole. Instead these fuckers get a seat in the cabinet or at least get one appointed for them. There's no way this is gonna change. Actually there is a way. A complete financial meltdown. When tgat happens people will no longer have any faith in the gov. I know I haven't in a longtime.

Looking at that patent (2001 is quite a while back, where's the fire?), I don't think it's so scary. After all, the DSHS is responsible for overseeing health care, and if things are going in a positive direction for mmj, this might be a hushed step toward bringing this to people who need the medicine. Why not? I've seen tons of "for the people" paperwork sneak through under the radar of corporate lawyers (it's very much a robin hood gig sometimes!)

If any of you guys know anything about the health care reform debate (I mean other than twisted sound bytes), it really is interesting to think that DSHS could be attempting to leverage the use of this plant within a single payor system for the widest population in the US, the medicare and medicaid insured populations! Just a crazy, hopeful thought. :D

I am sorry but I can not with the greatest of effort see these beautiful things you seem to see in our government...I wish I lived where you do as it surly isn't the same here in the USA I reside in

A guy I work with used to be in the medical field, working with pharma reps. Last week we went out for a few drinks after work, and we got to talking about health care and whatnot. He tells me about 3 yrs ago he was at a seminar (in Vegas, paid for by big pharma-go figure) and had a chance to talk to some higher ups in the industry. So he had asked how reaserch was going on cures for some of the major diseases ie: cancer, aids, etc. He said they responded, totaly straight faced and without missing a beat(his words)-"we dont reaserch cures, theres no money in curing diseases"... F'ing great these are the peple our health is depending on and the people with the most influence in Washington. Hang em high til they swing in the breeze...

wow, now thats something i wanted to hear. they know marijuana is the cure for cancer. its been proven to destroy cancer cells. the pharmaceutical companys know this as well. makes so much sense. like if a person is cured, they arent going to be buying as many drugs as the person with cancer. damn this country is so fucked.

true that. I think the last thing they cured was polio haha. And the only reason why polio is not around anymore is because the guy who invented the vaccine gave it away instead of making billions off of it.

theyre still pissed about the money theyre missing out on for curing polio.

its true theres no money in cures my friend told me this like in 3rd grade

its fucked up though if weed actually did prevent cancer 100% of the time and theyre purposefully keeping it illegal so cancer stays uncureable, thats some nazi shit right there

i mean obviously it doesnt cure cancer once u have it or else these medical patients wouldnt die X D

well no it doesnt cure cancer. but i beleive it is the answer. the cure to cancer will be found in marijuana someday, weather we will ever know, or see it is a different story i guess.
