Don't sell yourself short yet.
Just because you didn't get the most hyped model around doesn't mean you bought a P.O.S. LED light.
From what I've read on Sunshine Systems, they veg great and flower adequately.
Give it a couple cycles before you relegate it to the veg room for good though, it may surprise you yet.
Good luck.

Thanks! I am keeping optimistic about it for sure.
I had my room all ready to go weeks ago when I originally ordered a few 357 magnums and after multiple complications,
I finally decided to see what was available locally. I found this light in Sac ready n waitin!!!
And although it may not be the latest thing out, it's a start (with LEDs ;} ) and I am Stoked!!

Does the 240 Blackstar actually draw 240w from an outlet or around half that? I don't doubt they are good lights but I have doubts from reading posts about people with blackstars that were running at half power. And that wouldn't be because of a defective unit, it would be because they are getting the sum of the wattage of the LEDs and not the actual draw. As in a '300w' light has 100 3w LEDS, in reality though they can only run at about half power which means such a 300w light may only really be a 150w light. Some companies mislead this way and others don't. I think Blackstar makes good LED lights but I think they are misleading people this way.
Somebody tested the actual draw on the 240 Blackstar and apparently it was 166w Actual Draw

I'm currently flowering under 7 CFL's but my buddie ordered me a red spectrum LED grow board.. its small we are excited to see if it will do anything at all? im gonna continue to use the CFL's but now move like 2 of them on the sides so i'll have 4 on the sides 3 on top with the LED.. anyone try something like this before? howd it work out?

here it is.. i know its small and all that but we're just experimenting with it

Its not an issue of the unit itself being small, its the LED size that really matters... and a general rule of thumb is that anything below 1w per LED diode is useless for growing, with an acception maybe to 0.5w LEDs in a confined PC or other Growbox... I didn't do the math but I think your LED's on that unit are 0.02w per diode... Perhaps keep an eye out for some 1w UFO's can be pretty cheap (but still made in china with china bulbs)... or some panels of .5w's... just a thought

i went to a hydro shop today and saw an indagro lit up in a big tent i could look right at it i cant even look right at my 90w led panel i dont think the indagro is gonna beat any serious led
I respectfully disagree. Looking at a light is no test. A purple light or a high intensity light to the eye means nothing to a plants lighting needs.

For the most part our plants need UV (380-520 nm) and IR (610-720 nm) that are outside the range of the human vision (520-610 nm). So our looking at a panel and comparing it to any other light to determine what will be better for your plants lighting is meaningless.

LED will be more intense to the eye because it's delivers a narrow focus beam spread. In fact it's painfull to look directly at an LED array. You have to measure the energy with a quantum meter for intensity as measured in umoles and what spectrums the lamps emit over a square meter.

I've seen both LED and inda-gro tent grows (they have a video showing plants @ 9 weeks from seed on their website) and a comparison grow from seed would not be something any LED mfg would even consider. They'd get waxed.

i know you didnt just say 610nm was ir and that 520nm was uv bro i know you didnt. ir starts at ~710 and goes from there, uv starts at around ~380 and lower

respectfully disagree but if you dont have your facts straight i dont think i can trust your word or opinion just fyi

also in visible range alone the indagro was nowhere near as bright

i bought one for kicks, imma hook it up soon and show you the difference with a head-on photo

but its not an idagro its a true bispectrum induction lamp with two different colored sides

In the interest of complete description of these ranges I could have said these fall between violet/ultraviolet and red/infrared but I expect that most of the people reading these forums already have an understanding of spectral wavelengths relative to PAR and human visibility. If not this chart accurately makes that point. with solar and PAR perspectives.

see chart 4; http://inda-gro.com/gallery/album/9

Do you mind me asking what brand of bi-spectrum induction lamp you're using and how's it been doing for you? If it's doing better then ithe nda-gro I want to know about them.

Thanks

and i just ordered it so ill see how it does soon enough i saw pitiful lettuce even under 300w mland induction i dont think induction is all that good for much of anything really

much like the differences between a boom box and a high end amp / pre-amp, with high frequency drivers there are huge differences between driver mfg's and the phosphor blends they use.

All I know is that I've seen 600 umole average/sqm at PAR uv and ir spectrums that do not require mated red and white lamps together and the grows have all been outstanding in yield and quality. More resin and oil build up on the kolas and the frost is everywhere.

I've not seen a spectral distribution graph of mlands product so I'll be interested to see how they do for you. After reading this though I'd have a backup HID on hand.

Hi, Im going to be growing using two five gallon bubble buckets in a 36" X 20" X 62" grow tent. Ive been looking into different types of LED lighting systems and Im wondering if you guys have an opinion on these (http://www.accesshydroponic.com/product.php?productid=349&cat=39&page=1)
Would it work throughout the entire grow period? Would it work at all?
Or, would it just be better to stick with something more traditional i.e. (http://www.accesshydroponic.com/need-to-change-pix-225-led-grow-light-panel-hydroponic-light-system-red.html) or (http://www.accesshydroponic.com/225-led-hydroponic-light-system-panel-blue.html.)

Any information that you could bestow upon a new student would be wonderful.

I wasn't the one who brought mommas shoe closet into this, and I don't care I'm outa here now that another AWESOME LED thread has been hijacked again by HPS users. I'm tired of the same old argument over and over again. gram per watt and the LED takes it everyday!! PEace thanks to all the LED users unite mainstays up on here for all the informative reviews.
dont let the haters get to you man, your info is sooo much more important to this thread, we need to keep it alive.:leaf:

how often do you led users water and feed your plants...is it less often since the lights dont get as hot and you probably water less...?

Below the top of my plants with my 395w (actual draw) LED light the temps are stable at room temp or colder because of fan), with my 400w HPS below the tip of the foilage would about 10 degrees or more above room temp/. But since I use airpots I'm not sure that I see the difference in watering, but there certainly should be. Then again it gets really confusing because some LED lights are better than HID and might make the plant work harder thus using even more water... who knows lol

Well you are on an LED thread so of course my answer is Blackstars or Kessil.
Kessill is apparently really good, at least for penetration.
And the Blackstars are unbeatable for price to Watt ratio and apperently the 240w's easily match a 400hps (from growlogs not the company), so amybe a combo 2 - 240 blackstars for base coverage and 2 to 4 kessils to completely saturate all the way to the bottom.
Look forward to hear what you go with and hear/see results...
PEACE!
I own five Kessils and would MUCH rather have 4 blackstars hands down. I got drawn in by the hype and regret my purchase since Kessil has had so many defects. There's successful blackstar grows on here. Where's the Kessil grows?? There is none because you would have to have at least 5 at close to $1200. So not worth it!

Has anybody else noticed how much this thread has died off recently?
I think 3 things set this into motion.
First, the Kessil LED defect situation has really put the brakes on everybody's opinion of the company.
Second, website and ordering issues for the .357 Magnum LED's forced some buyers to choose other LED sellers.
Third, finding out that the Blackstar's only pulls around half their advertised wattage has brought that group back down to earth(this applies to the .357 Magnum's as well).
I'm not saying that Blackstar's are P.O.S., but some people were getting swelled heads and crowing a bit too loud about getting a deal that was too good to be true.

This thread was growing at a pace of around 2 pages (or more) a day up until recently, now only a few posts a day.
Instead of being united it seems like a lot more people were interested in trying to sell the other posters on their LED lights of choice.
Makes me wonder how much of this thread has been user generated content and how much has just been companies hawking their wares?

:finger: I have no swollen head on this matter with my blackstar. It's the best bang per buck still. No gimicky addons to pay extra for. We have successful grow journals now to back us and now im going led only on the next grow to shut up the nay sayers. I should pull decent bud and my early cut of this batch is KILLER. Its like smoking a piece of green velvet. Smooth and robust with a hint of fruit. Don't for one minute think that I have backed off one bit from my panel.

Yeah aside from the misleading watt ratings I don't have anything against Blackstar, those lights seem to grow
