I was using cfl's but i began having heat issues during flowering so i switched to led's. I too was very skeptical of led's but after a week all my worrying was pushed aside by some big buds.

I paid $260 for my blackstar 240watt and the flowering model light which I have is also good for veg but i may just use cfl's.
$260 wow that light would wana be worth it... Would u say the growth difference is big?? cus i can get a 400w HPS for $160, what i would love to see is two grows done at the same time with one using HID's and the other using LED's and really see the difference

So if anyone has read the last few comments in this thread they would have seen me trying to defend HID lighting systems, after a brief discussion with a few guys on here about the blackstar LED ight im pretty determined to start a LED grow myself. What my question is, is what type of set up should i look at for a small grow cabinet consisting of two plants??

I found these guys.

they seem pretty legit. although i think because of this being my first time im not really
able to determine how effective they are compared to another source.

or determine a good ratio for weeks to plant size.
You don't know the color? Or k temp? You need to be sure of the light frequencies you are working with.

edit: Oops, sorry...the link didn't work for me at first. I've seen those light bars, they're interesting. Just remember you need cool white (6,500k) for veg and warm white (2,750k) for flower.

edit2: 9w? I just saw the bars are 9w. I'm thinking it's nowhere near enough. I thnk I'd go with a Kessil.

edit3: If you're just using the bar for veg/clone it might be ok. Needs to be closer though, IMHO.

I have two plants going with a 240watt and it seems to be plenty of lighting for my two big girls

And its not all about bud size.....strain has a lot to do with bud size also
my sour og has five huge tops and the chemdawg has smaller nugs and more budsites

and my closet dropped from over 105F to about 78F

I plan on keeping my HID for flowering but I'd like to go t5 or LED for me vegging plants in order to keep my heat down. LEDs seem expensive but if they this one unit can maintain 6 vegging plants I will go for it. But because I am new to LED lingo I can't quite decide. Can anyone help me out?
Also how much of a pain is it to change bulbs when busted or dimming?
This unit is USA made which is my main turn on here (that and keeping temps cool):

Its compact size is perfect for all gardeners, and its unique chainable design allows for easy expansion.

* Top quality, high power 3 Watt LED emitters: Concentrated power to penetrate canopy
* Unique OptiGrow Spectral Coverage: Designed to accelerate vegetative growth
* For flowering, use as a supplemental light source with HID
* Highly efficient, fully integrated power supply and cooling fan.
* Recommended coverage area: Up to 3’ x 3’
* Proudly designed and manufactured in California
* No more external Ballasts!

OTHERWISE...
I was going to go with two of the following t5 units:

Sunleaves Pioneer VI Get efficient, high-intensity low-heat horticultural lighting with a Sunleaves Pioneer VI T5 fluorescent grow light fixture. This Pioneer features an exclusive wide dispersion reflector designed to cover a larger growing area than most fluorescent fixtures. Unit comes with a built-in 120-volt outlet to link multiple systems together, built-in ballast, hanging hardware, 11-foot power cord and an industry exclusive five-year warranty.
The Pioneer VI measures 47" x 20" with a depth of 2 1/4".

i probably should have asked this before since i already bought the led light now lol

anyway i plan on growing one plant in a small closet in a spare bedroom (3 feet in length...2 feet width and heigth is no problem at about 8 feet) door to the room can be open at any time for help cooling...i was going to use a 400watt mh/hps but found out i would need ducting and inline fans for heat and venting so i ditched that idea and now im stuck with those lights as ive lost the receipt

so the point is...will this led light...the purple kessil 150 run cool enough to not need any type of ventilation to cool the closet down...i can use regular fans but thats it...maybe crack a window at times

@IXOYE Sorry bro but Id hate to lie to you. Im no led expert. I can only tell you what works for me and I use a blackstar. But if I were you I definitely would not purchase that particular led for one because no specs are listed for the light.

You need no ventilation for heat. You will get superior light penetration with your Kessil, you made a good choice. Other LED lights are good, just different in the way they concentrate and project their light. Good luck.

im wondering myself if i should get away with a 4" fan with a carbon filter for my 3x3 grow tent that I'm thinking of getting once i put a 240w led unit in there or should i just pay the dough for the 6" model and use a fan controller to turn it down a notch for noise sake.

Those lights look good to me, but I haven't heard much from anyone who has one. Someone was touting them awhile back, but I don't remember who it was.

Don't see a mention of LED beam angles, which I would want to know about before buying. I remember seeing these on sale elsewhere.

If you did choose to flower with this light, I'm betting it would do well. It should manage a complete grow cycle if those are Cree LEDs. Why they suggest these as supplemental lighting is a mystery to me.

edit: Xtreme LED $450 (5w LEDs?)

If you just want an LED light to veg with, why not a Kessil blue for $206? That makes more sense to me. For the same expense as the Xtreme you could have 2 Kessils. There are lot's of choices, but the tech platform is superior and the modular aspect is good in case of a failure. I'd get a couple of purples if I were you. You might find yourself phasing out HID.

4" should do it, but you'd still probably want a fan speed controller.

I'm going to be going down the secret jardin tent/kessil lights/soil grow route. I'd love to start off with 3 lights, but due to finances think I'll have to start with 1. Was going to go with a magenta but would the purple be better?
Also its great to hear that you don't need any fans ducting out the heat (using a kessil). as a complete newb with no DIY skills, that part sounded the most difficult to set up. Thing is I'm conscious of odour control, can you just hang a carbon filter in the tent? Or does it only work if your pulling air through it? Also how good is the ONA gel? I've realised I've got space for a 4/5 plant tent & need to understand how to control odours without the use of saws, drills & power tools. Any help appreciated!

The Gonzo Odor Eliminator works great for my two plants.. I havent smelled my plants outside of the closet since they were a few weeks into veg. I put one on the inside of the closet and one on the outside after flowering started getting heavy and I have absolutely no problems with odor. I ended scrappiny my diy carbon filter plans because I never needed it.

i think you should be ok with a setup like im going to do with a 4" inline fan with a fan controller on it. i think im going to go with one of those sunleaves windtunnel models since ive seen good things about them. Idk what filter im putting but itll be the best bang for buck thats for sure lol. btw you need a fan to use a carbon filter the exhaust has to pass through it to filter.

Griffta- If you're going to veg and flower with one light, go with a purple. Get a magenta later on. I vegged with a magenta and it worked, but I think a little more blue would've been optimal. I'm glad I went with the magenta, I am now supplementing an induction bulb for veg, and everything is good.

For odor control, there are lots of options. One is a portable hepafilter. There are many out there for under a hundred bucks. I bought one for 25, but it's been discontinued. Kush Groove's option might suit you, I'm going to check it out. TshirtNinja's plan is probably best.
