its all a bunch of horseshit to me!! I could give a fuck less what they're doin in the uk and about 2 states over for that matter!!! they say we are in a depression but i cant tell except for gas fluctuating!.. whoo hoo..sure some of my friends have lost a few jobs but not anymore than im used to hearing about!! I remember back in January, in a town called Wootton Bassett, a group of muslims came to protest about the Afghanistan war, while bodies of dead soldiers were being driven through the town in herses, you know, for people to pay their respects and so forth.
Would they tolerate that shit in the United States? Fuck no.
And guess what, the only party that tried to stop them was... The British National Party - funny, where were the liberal democrats, the conservatives and the rest of the fuckin socialists?

I'd like to point out that you're right about how that wouldn't be tolerated here, but think about why... because Christianity is the dominant religion here. British people are much more secular in that regard, so when Christians here see anything as competition, especially in religion, they go NUTS! Anything that touches religion here in the states gets the fundies all riled up!

Let's not forget that it was the Europeans who ran the slave train and the British who forced the institution on the American south. They were agricultural colonies of England's - the mother country's breadbasket. The way to make them profitable was through slavery.

Here in the States we have a private organization called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). What would happen if one wanted to start an organization called the National Association for the Advancement of White People?
The quite simple answer to this question, and most permutations of this question, is that the United States built its wealth on the backs of slaves, predominantly African Americans. Even after emancipation, institutionalized discrmination and racism kept them from having a fair shake at ascending to the same heights as your average, run of the mill caucasian. Even after civil rights were passed (only after a failed attempt by right wing party to filibuster), African Americans were starting from a horribly imbalanced socio-economic situation, thanks to some of the factors I mentioned in previous sentences. That socio-economic imbalance still exists to this day, as does the achievement gap, institutionalized discrimination, and a bevy of other adversities that not many a white person has had to or ever will have to deal with in this country.
As far as why the BNP ar labeled as racists, I have to hazard a guess, seeing as how I do not follow politics on your side of the pond. But I would guess the BNP gets called racist due to the non-white clause you were forced to abandon. Something about excluding someone based on the color of their skin that strikes me as being a tad racist.

The United States did not build wealth on the back of slaves. The southern British colonies did, but slavery was their eventual undoing. The United States was the victim of slavery imposed by the mother country. The colonies were England's bread basket and slave labor was the plan long before anyone ever thought of the United States.

the British formally abandoned their claims to America in 1783...slavery was abolished in 1865. so that's just short of a hundred years where america wasn't british, but was using slaves.

Keep in mind that what we had then was 13 nearly independent countries bound by a weak central government. Almost all the founders were opposed to slavery, but it is a matter of history that to have attempted to abolish it in the south would have meant tearing the union apart. And European parties were waiting like predators for that to happen so they could step in.
Was the south hell bent on keeping slavery? Only because they were bound to an agrarian economy that couldn't survive without it. And in the end, reliance on slavery had kept the south a century behind the north in industry and technology and left them no match for the north when the civil war came.
Should slavery have been abolished sooner? Of course. Could it have been? Not as long ago as 1790's when elderly Ben Franklin pushed for it, but sooner than 1863 it could have been. There could have been a fiscal plan that would have compensated the south for gradually giving up slavery but things just weren't done that way then. The south didn't realize or accept that slavery was, as we say today, unsustainable.
The United States does not bear some guilt for slavery IMO. In fact, I think what was done re blacks in America in the 100 years after the civil war was more unconscionable than the 100 years before. But all that's behind us now because we have a black president.

slightly off topic and just out of interest, go back to before the american revolution - at what point after the european whites settled in america did their descendants start being american and not whatever nationality their parents were eg british?
3rd generation? after they'd been there for 5 years? or would you say it's a case of the soil they were born on?
