Project Mayhem - Tyler Durden's Perpetual Grow

Hey guys. I've been a member here since 2010, and I've learned most of what I know from this site. I started growing in a small one bedroom in Chicago starting in 2010 - I began with RDWC, then switched to flood & drain with great success. I'd throw out my 'hot trash' at 4am in the dumpsters of an adjacent apartment complex - root balls of perlite, vermiculite, and rockwool, fan leaves and stems, empty nute bottles, etc.. I've recently moved just over the border to Indiana, a backward State where they don't even have a medical MJ program. It's funny because they are now surrounded by rec legal States, Illinois, Michigan, etc.. I used to have a small clientele of musicians and DJs that bought all I could grow. Through legalization, I lost over half of them to plummeting weed prices and an overabundane of product. I'm a professional musician, and I drive back to Chicago for most of my gigs, so weed clients now just let me know what they want during the week, and I deliver it to them after my gigs, usually on the weekends. Anyway, I don't have the option of throwing out hot trash anonymously any longer, so I decided to switch up to aero systems to avoid tossing bales of used grow media. Now I just burn the dried plant material in the fire pit late at night, usually while roasting a few s'mores. I bought this house for all cash, money that I've saved from my city grow for the last decade. I was fortunate to meet a master electrician through my brother-in-law (who also renovated my house). This electrician had plenty of experience setting up MJ grow rooms and meth labs, so I didn't worry at all about him setting up mine. They both work for a large drug dealer in the city who prefers to wash his money through real estate purchases, so he always employs the same loyal contractors to rehab properties, they have been with him for decades. The electrician wired my grow room with 8000 watts, more than I could ever use in there because I couldn't fit that many lights. It is nice not to have to run cords from all over the house anymore. I spent most of my savings on this house, but I plan to build it back up with my lucrative music business and the new grow. Should be able to do so since I don't have to worry about rent nor a mortgage payment any longer. Plus, the cost of living here is super cheap. The room isn't that big, about 13ftx7ft with 8ft ceilings. It is enough for a 4x4 veg tent and the rest of the space for flowering and equipment. I have a 12,000 btu window ac unit in there for the summer, and air intake from one window, and exhaust out the other through a large carbon filter. I built my aero/nft systems from designs that Stinkbud and Superstoner came up with, a la the Harvest a Pound Every Three Weeks thread. I'm really thankful for their guidance. TLDR, I know. So without further ado, let's go...

Built the first system, and needed to build 3 more. I'm flowering 3 systems under 2 1000w HPS Eye Hortilux bulbs run by 2 quantum ballasts. I needed an extra system clean and ready to go after each harvest, so 4 systems total.

IMG_2882.JPG

I had some learning to do as this was a new style of growing for me. The water in this town is trash, it tries to kill every plants it touches. I was used to running sterile at the old place, just using Dutchmaster's Zone in the flowering rezes. This new water uses chloramines which I supplemented with the pool shock I use in my aero cloners. But I got root rot anyway. I tried again using both sodium chloride and/or pool shock. Even with the bleach at astronomical amounts, instant root rot. So I decided to go the bennies route. No go there, either, more root rot. I came to the hypothesis that there was enough chloramines to kill my bennies, but not enough to kill the ungodly amount of pythium from my tap water. So through trial and error I found the solution - I used API's tap water conditioner to neutralize any chlorine and chloramines, with an added bonus of neutralizing heavy metals. I then add my bennies. I only use API's Eco Fix now, I've tried great white, hydroguard, Southern AG's GFF with some success, but nothing works as well and is as easy as Ecofix, which is a super concentrated blend of beneficial bacteria. Both of these API products are meant for aquariums to keep fish and aquarium plants at optimal health, but they are tits for cannabis production, too. And they are super cheap.

First system, third try. Finally success!

IMG_2881.JPG

Big ass AC for summertime. I cut out a side panel flap and put in a 6 inch register duct vent with screen over the outlet to the outside spray painted white. Looks very normal from the outside, though no one can see that as it is in my yard.

Second system built and installed
IMG_2898.JPG

3 more weeks and things are looking great. I had to bend my GG4 WAY over as it was too close to the light, and it was shading other plants.

IMG_0374.JPG

The second system was looking great, I filled out the canopy well via LST, and the double trellis is great for tucking at different stages. I put all the fan speed controller on this second system right in the middle for easy tweaking of the room's atmosphere - Exhaust fan, room odor fan also on a carbon filter, and the fan for the lights on its own closed air circuit (in from one window and out the other). Very convenient.

3 more weeks and I put in the third and final system, getting the hang of this now. Got Strawberry Cheesecake, Blue Dream, and GG4 in there -

Fans, ballasts, cords are all stuffed in a corner behind my tent.

IMG_2885.JPG

Let's go to my veg tent. Got moms in a 3ftx2ft F&D tray from my last grow, it is the only component that isn't aero. It is under a 250w HPS light. I like to have my moms able to be mobile, you never know when you may have to shut down suddenly and I never want to lose my genetics. I had to shut down once at the old apartment when they were installing new windows, and moving to this new house I just had to put my potted moms in a box and bring them on over. I couldn't do that if they were stuck in a stationary system.

IMG_0379.JPG

I originally had a taller veg system so the roots could get long and hang without laying in water -

IMG_2889.JPG

But I couldn't get that tote to stop leaking, so I swapped it out for a Coleman cooler. It isn't as tall, but absolutely no leaking, and it helps to keep the water temp in check. Veg unit and cloner under T5s.

IMG_0399.JPG

Under the veg unit is my Clone King aero cloner. I own 3 of them, as I used to do a sog and needed LOTS of clones. Now I just need a few each run, so I end up culling all but 6.

I run the cloner and moms system sterile, Dutch Master Zone for the moms and just RO water and pool shock for the cloner. For everything else I use bennies, the API Eco Fix. Even with veg unit getting to 80 degrees, my roots are pristine -

Thanks for sharing that. Talk about upgrades! One thing I'd do is remove any exposed fiberglass insulation from the grow area. Otherwise I think it's about perfect. I'll be curious to hear how it goes and what changes you make if any.

Very nice setup. Masterfully put together. I enjoyed hearing your story. Congratz on the house!! Good on you for making wise choices. I am both jealous and inspired.

After 13 years of mindlessly tending to 2 grows and endlessly chugging out product like a zombie, I split with my growing partner and ended up randomly adopting a 9yo lol. I let all equipment and genetics go. But now my state has legalized home growing and my son is older AND I'm sick of 9-5 work, so I'm starting again from scratch. Looking at your setup has given me a little hope and a little determination. Thanks for the thread.

Thanks, Heis. That means a lot coming from you. I hope the split with your grow partner was amicable. So cool of you to adopt a child! I kinda wish I could return mine, lol. J/K, I love my troublemaker son. You don't seem like a 9-5 guy, so welcome back to the fold. At least you can buy award winning clones online now, so you have a leg up in the genetics department. $400 should buy you all the genetics you can handle. Can't wait to see your new grow, please let me know when you post pics. SO glad I spent my money on this house, the nest egg is growing back slowly, but surely. It is sweet to be semi-retired...

The split was not amicable lol, but It's ancient history now. I am out of touch but I think if I grow some top shelf fire and visit a couple of old homies I can get enough bites to make it worth it. The area has been flooded with cheap backdoor dispensary mids for years now. It's homogenous crap and no matter what label it has it just tastes like weed. Some of the new smokers don't even know what fire is. They only taste flavor when they hit a cart.

So... what did you have in mind for $400? Do you have any experience with ordering clones? I see you are running Cheesecake, GG4 and Blue Dream. Must be winners if you have kept them going. I would love to know why you keep them and see some updated pics. I am going to hunt through seeds and try for something exotic. I feel like a clone that anyone can buy and grow is by definition mundane no matter how good it is. I want something that can be coveted. So far I've ordered from Humboldt (Jelly Donutz) and Solfire (Don Mega crosses) which have just popped. Next I'm trying Modified Moose crosses from Threes Genetic Reserve because he breeds with the aim of washing for concentrates. Any suggestions based on your experience would be great!

I'd be interested in knowing if you've changed anything with your setup and why. I'm pretty much just going to copy you lol. Seems perfect because the setup is small-scale enough to give it love and produce quality, yet it's streamlined for production/efficiency. Right up my alley!

Yes very cool setup. Question: Do you drain, refill and recondition the reservoirs every 7-10 days?
Thanks. Nah, I just refresh the rezes when they are almost empty, about every 3 weeks or so. Each system eats at a different rate depending on how far along they are. All I do is check their PH every couple of days and add a little Ecofix twice per week. Pretty easy.

In Illinois dispensary weed is supposed to be super dank. I still have never been in one, but customers report it is all fire. Seems the bar is pretty high here. Good to hear that you have a potential customer base, that's the hardest part of the job for me now, acquiring new clients.

I had 6 pheno-hunted moms when I first moved to the new digs - Strawberry Cheesecake, Durban Poison, Blue Dream, Vanilla Kush, GG4, and OG Kush. The OG was my very first keeper, and I ran her for 13 years, but the genetics finally blew out. By that I mean after making copies of clones hundreds of times the genes of a strain seem to deteriorate. Some say you can clone a strain forever, but I've not found that to be true as I've blown out several strains. So I finally let the OG Kush go, no one was ordering her anymore, anyway. I purchased six new strains of supposedly award winning clones from www.marijuanaclonesonline.com. 3 sativas and 3 indicas - Oreoz, Gasonade, Apple Fritter, Divine Storm, Exalation, and Mimosa. The clones were in rough shape when they arrived, but I managed to nurse them back to health and grew them into moms. I'm convinced that at least 2 of the clones were infected with a fungus, which retarded their potential and made them difficult to clone. I've let go of the Apple Fritter, Divine Storm, and Mimosa because of below acceptable yields, but the remaining strains are keepers for sure. The Oreoz may be the greatest plant I've ever grown - huge yields, dense super frosty buds, crazy potent, tasty, and great bag appeal. The Gasonade is a close second, the Oreoz is 80% indica and the Gas is about 80% sativa. The Exalation is a super potent indica. I spent $300 on the new strains, but I would have paid that just for the Oreoz or the Gasonade. I plan to order 4 more strains soon to complete my stable of a dozen ladies. That's all I have room for.

I haven't changed anything, I think I have the room pretty dialed in at this point. A lot of planning was done before I started building, so it came together rather quickly. Please copy my design, which is just the best ideas from reading through that humongous thread three times, lol. I believe you will have a lot of fun with this setup, it is really simple once you get the hang of it. Let me know when you have questions, best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. I've never been in a dispensary but I've always assumed it's like a bar; I would find a variety of quality priced accordingly. My friends who visit dispensaries when they go to Vegas have good experiences. But when I go looking for reports online it seems a great number of people do not like dispensaries and some even say they stopped being able to get good weed once their state became legal. So it's hard to say what to expect here. Literally the same week of my first new harvest a dispensary will be opening up 10 min away, so I guess I'll find out.

One thing I keep hearing is that even when people can't sell their flower, if they turn it into concentrates it flies out the door. I've been assured that I can get rid of moon rocks for $15/g all day to no end. So along with new genetics I'm purchasing new bubble bags and a rosin press. Should cost me less than what my tent and lights cost back in the day.

I also found my genetics petered out around year 12 or so. Sure you can technically clone forever and it may not even matter that much for breeding purposes, but when you grow for production I think at some point you use up the potential. The guy who taught me to grow used to grow his strain outdoors once every 5 years or so and take cuttings from that. He felt that it reinvigorated the strain. Looks like tissue culture will basically be easily doable/affordable for home growers in a few years, so at that point we can just keep stuff forever.

I purchased six new strains of supposedly award winning clones from www.marijuanaclonesonline.com. 3 sativas and 3 indicas - Oreoz, Gasonade, Apple Fritter, Divine Storm, Exalation, and Mimosa. Damn, those are beautiful. I appreciate the info. Certainly does make the idea of ordering clones very appealing. Honestly, those buds look so good that it sort of sours me a little on the prospect of pheno hunting lol. Far less point to it these days. But I do fear the various viroids/diseases and there are so many good breeders with interesting crosses I want to try. I, too, want to create my own mother bank. So, maybe some day once I curate choice mothers from seed and you collect elite clones we can trade. ;)

Pls let us know which additional clones you pick up.

Hey brother great set up u have out there .. I grow about 10 years ago and now getting back to it ... ur set up looks what I actually had in mind to do ... if u do not mind me asking how much of yeild u have on average from one of ur units ?

And u mentioned that electrician help u set up that side of ur grow .... I actually was thinking running thick 220v cable and set up breaker box just for that room ... essentially like u would do subpanel in ur normal home to gain more circuts ... in this case to have steady supply of power just for that box and use ...
I also thought in case of power outage I can plug in generator just to that subpanel so my grow will be set ...
I noticed u mentioned ur grow u based of superstoners and I would assume Stinkbud systems .. funny when I grow almost a decade ago Stinkbud units was a hype now a decade later that thread on RUI still going .. it was crazy to see that ...
Anyways ... great set up bro ....
I am thinking to do 3 areas of 4x4 or 5x5 and instead of having fance support , do what u did, with double tarallis , i think that have better merrits then fence post in case I wanna tuck some branches and do LST to have unified canopy ....
I am planning to run LED's for my lights to control temps easier .... back in a day I run HPS because LED's was a new thing on a block and yeaild wise they ware very poor in comparison to HPS ... now days LED's went a long way so I am planning to give them a shoot ...

How long i veg ur plans for ? U stick to original 3 weeks? Or u veg them longer to fill ir space better ?
Sorry for so many questions but u have very close to what I am planning to do that is why I am excited to bump into ur thread ...

I actually was searching bennies in RIU search box that is how I end up on ur post lol ...
I want my roots healthy and on different post somone mentioned that so I figured I will search for it ....

As of genetics ... great idea to go straight to clone ...
However ...
I have my old seeds I label them and date them so they going form 2006 to 2014 ... so who knows if they will sprout
I have
Pineapple express from G13 Labs
Larry OG aka lemon Larry aka sour larry .. not sure by who lol
Vintage by CH9
Jack flash by Sensi #5..that is Jack Herrer fem pheno
fem pheno of Jack Herrer by CH9 as well.
Jack47 by SweetSeeds
As name say cross of Jack Herrer and AK47
Northern lights blue by Delicious seeds
Cotton candy by Delicious
Afgan kush x Yumbold by Wold of Seeds
Critical Jack Herrer by Delicious
And last but not least ... Blue Dream by Humbold

So I will germinate bunch of them and actually see after all this time if any of those will germinate .. if not I will be going straight clone route ...
I'm looking forward to Herrer family personally ..
Those plants was super coated with trix...
Even stems had trix on some of the phenos .. it was unreal actually ..
AK47 worked wonders for Stink in this set up ..
If I member correctly AK pheno he had it was very vibrant ... the one I grew back in a day was single cola structure that is why was perfect for SOG when u nip that AK couple of times u end up with few heavy colas ...

Nowday I know things progress since my last grow and there r some strains that register THC in 30 percentile ranges ... talking about one hit wonder lol ..
Anyways again great set up bro ...

And again I probably will have more questions for u down the road .. Allright bro good luck and happy growing .
