Do I really need to trellis?

So I was trying to follow what everyone says about using a trellis net but after the first tuck they shot right past the one net I have set up. My question is do I really need to do this? They seem to be spread apart nicely enough where pretty much All the tops are getting light.

Short answer, no. With the caveat that they will continue to just grow straight up and not develop additional cola's, aka bigger top buds. So unless you do some sort of training the plant will grow taller and possibly more larf, smaller less desirable lower buds.
From where you are now you should be able to bend them back through the net, weaving the taller branches back down even with the rest of the growth. Repeat as necessary. This will change typical growth and even out the canopy giving you lots of nice tops, instead of a few tall tops.

As they grow through the net should I just slide the net up and re-tuck? I'm really not trying to add a second net. Makes water changes more difficult.

The objective is to promote lateral growth.

That can be accomplished by moving the net as the plants grow. or a second trellis.

3.5"x3.5" trellis netting is dirt cheap; a taut trellis works better than the stretchy stuff btw

No net needed. I never use a net. Half the time I see photos of people using them they're not serving any purpose. It's as if they just saw people using nets and put one in as well. You need one if you're growing SCROG style but many are not using them properly and just let the plants grow straight up through them. If you don't know what SCROG is then you shouldn't use a net until you learn what it is.

I don't grow SCROG style so I don't use a net.

I've done it multiple ways, screen, net, tie downs, ect. Like Billy said it's about growing it wide instead of tall. Low stress training is something you want to research extensively if you're not already.

I feel you on this. I see that often too and think that same thing. I'll probably just move it up a little bit more as it grows until it's done stretching.

i don't like a net in my tent, it just makes life more difficult...
i do my training during veg, and early flower. all of my pots have holes about every 3 inches about a half inch from the lip, and i use a lot of green garden wire ties to stretch them out. i leave them tied out for the first 2 or 3 weeks of flower, then take them off. they're usually done stretching by then, and all the new growth is already oriented the way i want it.

Hmmm I like this idea. Thanks man!

You don't have to use anything. That being said I find that nets are super easy and effective. Especially late in flower when buds get heavy and I find that the whole tent can start leaning in one direction and crowding the existing canopying one way or another. Depends on what you are growing too, if the plants stay squat and don't stretch much a net may not be as beneficial as it would with some leggier sisters. Buds can get pretty heavy when ripening.

As mentioned previously a taught net works better IMO but flatten the canopy however you think is efficient and after a few cycles you'll get a feel for it.

Good luck.
