CEC of South Ossetia received a statement on the "Russian" referendum
An application for registration of an initiative group for a referendum on joining South Ossetia to Russia was received by the Republic's Central Election Commission, press secretary of the South Ossetian leader Dina Gassiyeva told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the President of
South Ossetia , Anatoly Bibilov , said that the republic would soon take legal steps to become part of
Russia . According to him, the opportunity to realize this "strategic goal" was back in 2014, when Crimea was reunited with Russia following a referendum.
The group consists of about ten people - Bibilov, ex-president
Leonid Tibilov , parliament speaker Alan Tadtaev, as well as political and public figures of the republic.
Earlier it was reported that the referendum on joining Russia will take place after the presidential elections, which will be held on April 10, when all the necessary legal procedures are completed.
Moscow recognized the independence of South Ossetia, and with it another former Georgian autonomy,
Abkhazia , on 26 August 2008. Earlier that month, Russia came to the defense of South Ossetia from the Georgian army, which sought to return it to the rule of
Tbilisi . Since then, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the recognition of both republics reflects the prevailing realities and is not subject to revision.
