DIY with Quantum Boards

I have a bridgelux build that has 10x2700k cri90 running on a hlg320h 42 ab driver and I’m looking at adding a few qb96’s to the frame. How many would you guys recommend for a 4x4 with my current setup? Say 4 or 6 on another 320 driver?

Id suggest four, one for each corner. Wattage: it kinda depends on your desired hanging height, ideally it would be the same as your other fixture.

Yes I would want to mount them on the same fixture How many 96’s would I need to run on a 240 or 320 driver in parallel to avoid heat sinks? Or would it be best to run heat sinks no matter with them? I also have 10 more of the strips I can use. Maybe 20 of the strips on the 320 and maybe 4 96’s on a 240 or another on another 320? Sorry for the questions but I don’t know a lot about these 96’s.

As per hlg web: they can handle 25w/500mA with no sinking so you really need heatsinks with those. 240 driver looks good for total wattage, not sure about those hanging heights.

best to run heat sinks
The QB96 engines can be absolute beasts. For $70 each, that board/140mm pin heatsink combo will take 200W alone. Not that you'd have to run them that hard, but ya can!
I run them individually on XLG-200-H-AB drivers, which is essentially the HLG 225 unit.
You want the heatsinks if you use those, as there's really no other good way to mount them, that I've found.

God Damnit …. Just as I’m hiding my wallet and I see that HLG 200 with a 648 board and driver !
For $199 .

Jeezus you guys are killin me LOL …. How about friends and homeboy code .?

Do you think 2 HLG 200 could be enough light for a 5x5?

This guide is a "it depends" scale. If you put 512 watts of Diablos in a 4x4 you better be running CO2 or dial them down! I run my DIY 650R copy at 320 watts ( 360 actual from the wall ) and get good results. I'll probably up it to a 480H and dimm it to around 400-420 watts then measure PPF.
We really need to stop using watts as a metric, it really is not even close to being an accurate gauge. And you don't need a meter, the apps available are accurate enough to use to adjust your lights in a grow, we don't need scientific accuracy and it tells you a hell of a lot more than watts per sq.ft. does. This is a hangover from the HPS days and was a very rough way to gauge how much light you needed. we have better tools now.

I want to get one of the QB96's to run in a small tent. I already have two drivers from previous builds, HLG-120h-48A & HLG-120h-1400B - any chance I can use one of them to power one QB96? They are both right at the driver limits. My backup plan is the QB288. A little more expensive but it looks like it won't get as hot so I won't need as much headspace (it's a small tent, 2x2x4).
Any thoughts on one over the other (or something else entirely)? I do not want to buy another driver.
Thanks for the input!

Much more knowledgeable people than myself in this thread, but personally I would go with the qb288 in there. With limited height like that, you'll be able to get the plants closer to the light and probably much better spread that way.

Havent been on hlg's site in a bit, but maybe check around and see if you can find a pack of qb 120s on there. If I remember correctly, they run on 24ish volts so could be paired up with either driver and (if all 4 fit) would give you wall to wall diodes run softly with just a simple frame/wiring to be done. Also gives you a bit more versatility moving forward and ability to cover more area in the future with them.

Again, no expert, just my two cents.

I could be wrong here and wouldn't mind getting double checked, I haven't used constant current drivers, but from what I know that should drive one QB96. Driver does ~150 watts at 54 volts and it shouldn't burn up the board if its screwed on to the heat sink with a thermal pad. The HLG website talks about ~225watts being close to the max. So in theory, your pairing those would be pretty safe.

Should work because I run two qb96 off a HLG 240h 54a

crank them up and you can get 100 watts out of each of them. They’ll get hot, but keep a fan on them. They make off brand “hoods” for the qb96 for a better spread with a quick google search. Your middle will obviously be abit hotter and running 4 at lower watts would be ideal but what can ya do….

The 120-48A should work ok if youre on 220-230V AC: it will go all the way up to 54V, but only 51V at 120Vac. The c1400 will drive your qb96 but only to around 70w.
