Yup as CunningCanuk said wish was true, racist as all hell up here, everyone hates everyone, even hate themselves!
Damn, my friends from the Great White North are destroying my comfortable little image of Canada as a place of friendly good natured people living in a society w/far less issues than my country has, I still think it's true as I'm not sure that there is a sovereign country that exists today without skeletons in the closet.ccguns

Discovery of children’s remains at Kamloops residential school ‘stark example of violence’ inflicted upon Indigenous peoples

i heard a story about that on NPR awhile ago before the pandemic; I was in Boulder and rushed back to the car so i could hear it. they did similar things here as well to all peoples and then there was the attic (a popular choice for your unruly women) it's what happens when white hetero male gets to make all decisions.

I'd be willing to bet that America would put Canada to shame in it's horror history against it's people

places where the terrible, the unspeakable happens give rise for energy hunting; other dimensions because energy doesn't die it transforms.

Or, you could put the dump somewhere else.

Lots of land around this place. If they don’t like living near a dump they can easily relocate

I'm talking about solutions that can be implemented today and into the future, we cannot change the past, but we can rediscover it's true nature and make amends. Changing what a provincial or municipal government did 100 years ago is not possible, changing it today is possible. There is lot's of land in Canada and that part can be addressed directly, other wounds will need a different kind of healing and compensation. The past is just that, the past, we can only act in the present and look forward to the results of those actions we take in this present, or continue to live with the consequences of past cruelty and mistakes.

We've only had our constitution repatriated in 1982 and our modern supreme court is applying it to first nation treaties. Native Canadians gained new rights then, just like everybody else, we are now in the phase of enforcing those rights and reconciling treaties as valid legal documents, in accordance with our constitution and bill of rights. First nation land issues and rights are a constant feature in the Canadian legal system, as the rule of law is beginning to be equally applied to all.

We are part of an ongoing process, and not the finished article, because the finish line is constantly moving forward in a historic process called liberalism.

We are not too different from Americans demographically or culturally. Slavery was settled by the British government in the 1820's and before that in many parts of the empire like Canada. Bigotry and racism are a constant feature of the human condition and can be found in every country on earth, even ancient ones like India and China. No country has a monopoly on assholes, certainly not America or Canada.

Canada is about average in racism and bigotry, in the 19th century, Catholics were second class citizens in Canada and the USA where Protestantism was in ascendency. The KKK hated, Blacks, Jews and Catholics in that order and in NY an Irish Catholic was one step above black people in the social pecking order. In my home town here in Nova Scotia, one side of town was protestant and the other Catholic until near the middle of the 20th century. In the 50's and 60's Italian immigrants were regularly beat up in places like Toronto, Canada.

I've surely seen the photos in books of the "No Irish Need Apply" signs, pretty much in the USA every new ethnic group gets dumped on when they initially arrive(almost equivalent to a pay your dues type of thing). The 1st. gen. digs in and grins and bares it w/the hope that their children will do better,In my area in the 60-70's it was the Portuguese, now they are acclimated and successful and accepted, now it's the South Americans eg Brazilians,Hondurans,Equadorans, etc battling to establish themselves,it's a cycle that is always present.ccguns

That applies to White immigrants, Black people who were part of the American story since the 1600's are a different matter, they are a visible minority and distinct, it's the same for Asians, but not quite as bad. Jews who assimilate are unrecognizable except for their family names and many used to change them, especially those in the entertainment industry. Many movie stars changed their names to more Anglo Saxon types to have careers, prejudice and bigotry used to be more granular than it is today, even early rock stars changed their names. It used to be the same for women authors too, many wrote under male names or pen names to get published.

It's always useful to remember that white women never had the right to vote in America and the British empire until 1920 and were basically considered the property of their husbands. So when we speak of the treatment of minorities in the last century and before we have to look at the context, white males were the only ones who counted and before that, only white males who owned property. White Catholic males were second class citizens in America and the British empire, despite what the constitution said about religion.

Those are ex. points, too bad that the men who held this type of universal power couldn't have been more cognizant of other's rights and woman's aspirations as well, Even in the 50's no credit was extended to woman who stayed home and raised children, that maybe just maybe they had other interests and aspirations other than being a homemaker. A lot of WASP men were just downright mean and nasty and heartless and pretty much got away w/everything. You don't have to be extremely left to be a person who puts themselves in the shoes of others and consider their plight to influence your actions but it is a quality that was definitely in short supply and still is.ccguns

Was in tears by a little over half way. Thats only the start of what Catholosism brought our native brothers and sisters, lm white and hate more of my own race than any other. Never thought ld hear myself say that. But truth prevails.
It was an emotional day for sure, but essential for me to gain perspective. The experiences shared and the stories told pull hard on the heart strings. I have struggled with hatred, but have found it too powerful of an emotion to waste in ppl you don't really like or know. Tolerance is difficult, but understanding is even harder. I love everybody - some upon arrival and some upon departure.

I find it easy to attribute religion for many things that have gone wrong in the past and the future too will include injustices at the hands of religion. Religion is often a companion of the poor - it's as if religion keeps them poor - otherwise they'd kill the rich and take their things. Sadly, the pope hasn't acknowledged their role in the atrocities committed. Mankind has been good at treating others badly for a very long time. My optimism is strong/plentiful that we'll learn to be more harmonious in our interactions with others, as it's a benefit to us all. Being kind to a random stranger freaks them out - it quite gratifying/rewarding to both parties.

Who can be worse to their ppl, Germay or China would win hands down, maybe Cambodia
Our species is over a hundred thousands years old.

Our worst is virtually lost to history is my guess.

But I would put our abuse of the Native Americans or European abuse in Africa/India during the same period as the worst in the history I know about.

So far China has seemed more to brush the line of cultural genocide, but what I have seen they have not stepped over that line of actual genocide. Yet.

A lot of these “communities” were built/designed by the government of the day and forced people to live there. Water is just one of the issues that plague these communities. Yes it’s complexed and it’s been complexed for decades. If these issues plagued any community that had rich white people living there you’d be guaranteed it would be a priority. It sounds a bit like your blaming the people that were uprooted from their traditional lands then forgotten. School funding is like a 1/3rd of the the public school system. All I’m saying is there could be more done, and some things easily done, to alleviate a lot of the issues that isn’t being done. Promises are made then seem to be forgotten very quickly but yes your right in saying there are many issues that must be addressed. I drive through a First Nations community every week and what is readily apparent is the wealth devide between the people there with some living in a 3-4 million dollar home and a tarpaper shack 1/4 mile away :(. Although things seem to be getting better now that there are dispensaries every 100’ on the main arteries lol. (Just bought a 1/4 of sweet god to try $35). The point of this thread I think, is to point out that it took a search to find 230 buried kids, how the fuck do 230 kids just vanish in Canada, think about it!
Of course it is not a pretty history, guess what? The world was a cruel place. Countries went to war with each other. My dad's father was used by Polish soldiers for bayonet practice in front of him. He was sent off to Siberia for four years. The only reason he got out alive was the Red Cross would come and ask to take the most sick or malnourished, the Russians gave the people that were close to death and to used up to work any more. He came here and worked as a laborer for peanuts, rolled up American dollars and hidden inside Life Savor candies to his brothers and sisters on the other side of the Iron Curtain. They managed to escape to the West and emigrated here.

Mother's family had the same ordeal, Her dad taken away to prison by the Polish (mom and day only met here, they grew up in different parts of the country) as he was one of the few people that could read and has the most official person in the village because of it. Their farm confiscated, Grandma managed to get seven kids through a war zone (my mother was the eldest at 16). Soldiers came, their commander wanted to have a woman for the night, they grabbed my mother's mom. The sergeant said they can't take her, she is a little pregnant, the commander would not want that. They grabbed a 17 year old girl that worked as a nurse. She ended up crawling back to the village and dying the next day from being gang raped and losing too much blood. With barely anything my grandmother manage to get the kids to Germany, paid smugglers to get them across a forest at night. The whole story could fill out a page here.

And every DP, immigrant, after the war in our neighborhood had an equal story how they survived. One day in highschool, the teacher in my sister's class said something about in the neighborhood most everyone in the class had been abused. A girl laughed, "No way." and she looked around and everyone in the class was silent. Everybody knew it was true. A dirty little secret no one talked about. It never happened. Go on with life. My sister went to a reunion of friends a few years back. After a lot of drinking, bonding again, people aside would tell stories about what really was happening behind closed doors. And families looking all prim and proper Sunday morning for Church. I remember being at a friend's house hiding in the basement with him from his step dad who was pissed, slammed around his wife, raped his step daughter. Wasn't even a teenager then, didn't know what to to but be quiet.

The rash of suicides that comes up on reserves once in a while? It is not because the kids are missing their favorite TV channel. Same thing. Don't give out any dirty laundry and blame everything on Residential Schools. Sorry, I have seen kids get worse, some repeated the cycle, some said "I will not be like you, I will treat my kids how I wanted to be treated." But the Native leaders want to get political power and will ignore the plight of their people. Blame Whitey" We have a Commission of Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women.

"In 2015, close to one half (48%) of all solved homicides involving a female victim were committed by a spouse or other intimate partner. Family members (other than a parent) were perpetrators in 22 percent of female homicides, followed by casual acquaintances (14%), parents (6%), strangers (6%), and criminal acquaintances (3%). In contrast, males were most often killed by a casual acquaintance (45%), criminal acquaintance (16%) or a stranger (16%)."

"In 2015, approximately 16 percent of female homicides remained unsolved at the time of reporting to the Homicide Survey compared to 29 percent of male homicides.[ii] The percentage of unsolved homicides has increased significantly since Homicide Survey data collection began in 1961. For example, in 1961 approximately five percent of homicides involving a female victim and 6 percent involving a male victim remained unsolved. The increasing proportion of homicides that remain unsolved has been largely attributed to the increasing complexity of cases involving criminal acquaintances and gangs. On average, homicide incidents involving spouses and family members are solved more quickly than those involving perpetrators with greater social distance from the offender."

"This over-representation of Indigenous women and girls among homicide victims has been observed across the country, with the highest rates found in the territories and in the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, specifically, it has been estimated that Indigenous women and girls are 19 times more likely than Caucasian women to be murdered or missing."

And Canada was taken to task over the Native women that have been killed, even though a large majority of the cases are perpetrated by their own community. It is being labeled a genocide, even though Indigenous population is increasing.

UN Human Rights Office calls for examination of MMIWG inquiry's genocide claim
The United Nations Human Rights Office is urging the federal government to probe the national inquiry's conclusion that violence against Indigenous women and girls amounts to genocide, CBC News has learned.

"The national inquiry found reasons to believe that Canada's past and present policies, omissions and actions amount to genocide, under international law," UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani wrote in an email statement on Sunday.

"Given these findings by the inquiry, we call on the government to take steps for competent national authorities to assess these serious claims."

"The very first thing I'm sure the commissioner's going to want to see is what is the plan on the part of Prime Minister Trudeau and his government to address the conditions of genocide that he's admitted," said Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, a law professor at the University of British Columbia.

"The fact that the prime minister said 'genocide' triggers an international process."

"In 2016, there were 1,673,785 Aboriginal people in Canada, accounting for 4.9% of the total population. This was up from 3.8% in 2006 and 2.8% in 1996. Since 2006, the Aboriginal population has grown by 42.5%—more than four times the growth rate of the non-Aboriginal population over the same period.Oct. 25, 2017'

So the Aboriginal population has grown 42%, four times the growth rate of the rest of Canada. And it is a genocide. There is not enough housing. Not enough water. No jobs on the reserves, the government should do something. But Justin Trudeau has admitted to genocide on the Native population.

"
The following table of total aboriginal population is provided by Statistics Canada. The upturn beginning about 1960 is attributed in large part to better access to health care.

There are about 2600 reserves and something over 600 First Nations bands. Bands can be grouped (a) geographically, (b) culturally, or (c) linguistically. In the last category, native languages are classified under 12 language groups representing approximately 50 languages. The language groups are Beothuk, Eskimoan, Athapaskan, Algonquian, Iroquoian, Siouan, Kutenal, Salishan, Wakashan, Tsimshian, Haida, and Tlingit. Algonquian languages are spoken by the largest number (about 100,000); these include Blackfoot, Cree, Ojibwa, and Mi'kmaq.

The Irish moved when life was not viable in their homeland. Many other peoples have done the same. My relatives all had. But First Nations that are in the middle of now where with no access other than winter ice roads or by airplane are to have modern infrastructure built. There is a dire shortage of nurses and doctors on the reserves. Not unusual that non-native women really want to go up to a nursing station with all the crap going on up there, being harassed by the younger men.

Speaking of, we have too many Natives in prison, out of proportion to their percentage of population. Well we have a gang problem. It started with the Indian Posse. There are 6,000 members. their biggest rivals? The Manitoba Warriors.

Aboriginal street gangs
  • Manitoba Warriors.
  • Saskatchewan Warriors.
  • Kelowna Warriors.
  • Native Syndicate.
  • Terror Squad.
  • Most Organized Brothers (MOB)
  • Redd Alert.
Into drugs, prostitution, murder. Women are property to them. Get a young girl off the reserve who is already used to abuse and take her to the big city, fun and drugs, but you now have to bring in money for the gang.

Sorry for the rant, touching on many issues. The missing kids buried? Most died due to passing around pneumonia or other illnesses. No, they were not killed by priests, although I am sure they were not angels to them. Rather than flying the body up to wherever they came from they just buried then in the back. The electricians I worked with? One from up north, the other was also, he was white but had half native brothers, grew up along side them. They learned their trade to get out from where they were, there was no future for them.

Number of individual bands.

Above Thompson, forget about roads. Not a lot of economic activity for the bands.

i'm sorry if you don't agree my friend, but this story is not new; this wasn't just discovered..as for it not being a contest..just read the title + you guys are complaining you have shitty water?- Canada!

stop your bitching nothing competes with what we have got going on here in America- nothing.

they're just backing up and regrouping on Mango Maggot terms 'stand back and stand by'.

there is war here, Cunning; of the past 20 weeks or so, 15 weeks had mass shootings. terrorism is to terrorize to get their demands met keep everyone afraid. while some may be lone wolves? they're not; they're radicalized suicide bombers they set their homes on fire or sign it over to someone before they go to Kings Soopers or Walmart or the shift change at Amazon, FedEx, USPS.

they're coming unglued and we get to be the fall out.

i don't have many years left and i'd prefer to stay in my own world where i'm safe with my books, internet going to get virtual; having thisngs delivered- so the terrorists win i guess until the President can assure my safety in public. i have to walk my dog 3x day and hell i can't even wear a face mask without being heckled and shamed.

afraid of the CDC announcement America is on the honor system and can take their masks off. honor system, Americans, during a pandemic that we don't have 70% of compliance. add variants.

I take it you are of German descent and Hitler was the root cause of most of what you described, what the German's did in eastern Europe and Russian was atrocious. What goes around comes around, where justice is not possible, there is retribution. The trouble with retribution is that it just gives license to psychos and sadists and has little to do with justice and more to do with mob violence.

What you said about native issues is largely true, but it does not negate our responsibility for the plight of many native North Americans, particularly those whose homes and lands were stolen. Treaties are contracts and as bad as many were, they must be honored and if that is not possible some other just settlement has to be made. There should be minimum standards for human rights, equality under the law and quality of life for every citizen in Canada, native or otherwise.
