One thing to keep in mind is you measure the plant canopy to figure out what light you need, not the grow space. No sense in lighting unused space. There will be less reflection if the walls are further away but it's really the canopy you should be thinking about. Just a thought.
I didn't want to bring HID into the picture as you usually get shot down and told you're living in the past. But HID lighting is perfect for growing in the winter in an unheated garage. Plus you can get lights for the fraction of the cost of LED. An oil filled heater will keep the temps up during lights off.
Yea that’s what clicked for me too. I keep hearing they give off the most heat. If going they a winter cycle “almost” outdoors I figured it would fit best and cheaper to get started.

One of those dryer vents should kill that issue I think. The one that looks like a flat box against the outside tho, and it is open on the bottom that’s usually sheltered but I’m sure you can McGiver something up for that quick.
Probably how wide you want the canopy depicts how much spread you need. I guess you can go off how wide your canopies usually are but outdoors tend to be a lot bigger so idk if we can really go off that.

Sure, take a look at this bad drawing I just made real quick. Say you have a 5 x 5 tent and inside have plants that will be in center. The canopy is the amount of real estate the plant tops or canopy will take up. If the canopy of the plants only takes up a 4x4 space in the tent than that is what you need to light, there is no point in being to concerned about the perimeter around the plants since there are no plants in them.
Or just train them to keep in a specific footprint. Look at it this way, if you were growing a plant in an open room you would not light the whole room, you would put a light over the plant to cover the canopy.
