I don't worry too much about my own backyard, folks generally don't when they figure the leadership is at least responsible. We will have a commission of inquiry about this, but more to learn lessons than to assign blame, Trudeau knows this and has an eye on the future, unlike others. This crisis is make or break time for political leadership globally and they all know it, success is measured in deaths avoided and economic damage. If Justin does well here he will have a political future, and it works that way for every premier (and US governor).

Racism is the root of the divide, the culture wars are largely a proxy for this, but GOP support is still mostly bounded by bigotry, strong "feelings" motivate strong emotions, filter reality, block empathy, cause the intellect to rationalize illogically and cause social clustering along tribal lines. Most are driven by hatred and fear of the "other", and the "other" can be white too, though if they are physically different it gets a lot easier for most people, it's why one army wears one uniform and another wears a different one. The reaction is exacerbated by stress and fear and is more tribe dependent than race dependant generally.
