On Oct. 8, 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis recorded “Great Balls of Fire” at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee using three personnel: Lewis (piano/vocals), Sidney Stokes (bass), and a session drummer, Larry Linn, instead of the usual Sun backups Jimmy Van Eaton (drums) and Roland Janes (guitar). Lewis was quoted in the book JLL: His Own Story by Rick Bragg, (pg 133), as saying "I knew Sidney Stokes but I didn't know him that well either, and I don't know what happened to them people. That's the last time I ever seen 'em. That's strange isn't it?"
It was released as a 45 rpm single on Sun 281 in November 1957. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard pop charts, No. 3 on the R&B charts, and No. 1 on the country charts.

There is a reason some musicians become legends. They give 110%. Here is a good example:
On Oct. 8th of 1966, Cream - Band played a concert at Sussex University in the U.K. During the song "Toad", Ginger Baker played a 20 minute drum solo.
He put so much into it, he collapsed after he finished.
One of the reasons he was a legend.

Tuesday Sister ask if I'd like to kayak the river Wednesday. I had to drive the truck to work that afternoon so I could gas it up. I mentioned to my buddy about the river trip. He ask if he could come along, since it was his birthday. {we used to do a river camping trip every year around his birthday} His girlfriend, {and our cleaning lady at work} got mad and left. She resigned her position, packed up her shit and went home. So we are looking for a cleaning person. And my buddy is single again.


We did have a good day on the river though.

Oct. 10th is a special day for fans of The Kinks. It was on this date in 1969 when they released ‘Arthur (or the decline and fall of the British Empire)’, a concept album that was intended to be a score for a Granada TV program. The TV program suffered a number of setbacks and was eventually shelved due to lack of funding.
The story was inspired by the Davies brothers' older sister Rose, who emigrated to Australia in 1964 with her husband Arthur Anning. The lead character in the album, the fictional Arthur Morgan—modelled after Anning—is a carpet layer whose family's plight in the opportunity-poor setting of post-war England is depicted. Writer Julian Mitchell detailed the story line and characters in the liner notes of the LP.
The album was highly acclaimed by critics and reached 105 on the Billboard album chart, their highest position since 1965. It failed to chart in Britain.
Rolling Stone praised the album on its release, saying that Arthur presented 100 years of English history “through the eyes of one little man who never meant a thing to the rest of the world”. It was “less ambitious than Tommy, and far more musical”, JR Young wrote. “No fillers, no waste tracks, not a matter of ideas but of perceptions worked out by bass, drums, voices, horns and guitars – Arthur is by all odds the best British album of 1969.”
Arthur is receiving its due for its 50th anniversary with a variety of special editions scheduled for release in a couple of weeks on Oct. 25th. In addition to demos and outtakes, it will also include an unreleased solo album by Dave Davies from that era. Although the TV program was never finished, Arthur will be turned into a radio drama for BBC Radio 4 that is scheduled to air in November.

The first recorded organized recital of the original Pledge of Allegiance took place on Oct. 12, 1892, when some 12 million American school children recited it to commemorate the 400-year anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus.

Despite its widespread public acceptance at the time, important changes to the Pledge of Allegiance as written by Bellamy were on the way.

The U.S. Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was written in 1892 by then 37-year-old minister Francis Bellamy. The original version of Bellamy’s pledge read, “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic, for which it stands,—one nation, indivisible—with liberty and justice for all.” By not specifying to which flag or which republic allegiance was being pledged, Bellamy suggested that his pledge could be used by any country, as well as the United States.

Bellamy wrote his pledge for inclusion in the Boston-published Youth's Companion magazine – “The Best of American Life in Fiction Fact and Comment.” The pledge was also printed on leaflets and sent to schools throughout the United States at the time.


September 18, 1892: Francis Bellamy’s pledge is published in “The Youth's Companion” magazine to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.

October 12, 1892: The pledge is first recited in American schools.

1923: The original wording “my Flag” is replaced by “the flag of the United States of America.”

1942: The pledge is officially recognized by the U.S. government.

June 14, 1954: At the request of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Congress adds “under God” to the pledge.

1998: Atheist Michael Newdow files suit against the school board of Broward County, Florida to get the phrase "under God" removed from the pledge. The suit is dismissed.

2000: Newdow files a lawsuit against Elk Grove Unified School District in California arguing that forcing students to listen to the words "under God” is a violation of the First Amendment. The case reaches the Supreme Court in 2004, where it is dismissed.

2005: Joined by parents in the Sacramento, California, area, Newdow files a new lawsuit seeking to have the phrase "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. In 2010, the 9th Circuit US Court of Appeals denies Newdow’s appeal finding that the pledge does not represent a government endorsement of religion, as prohibited by the Constitution.

"The guided-missile destroyer Cole docked in Aden, Yemen, on Oct. 12, 2000, for a standard refueling stop when a small fiberglass boat laden with explosives maneuvered toward the port side of the destroyer.

The ensuing explosion ripped a 40-by-60-foot gash into the ship’s side, killing 17 and wounding 39 more.

Reports estimated that between 400 and 700 pounds of explosives were used.

“Jamal al-Badawi was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2003, charged with 50 counts of various terrorism offenses, including murder of U.S. nationals and murder of U.S. military personnel; was wanted by the U.S. for his role in the Oct. 12, 2000, terrorist attack against USS Cole; and was also charged with attempting with co-conspirators to attack a U.S. Navy vessel in January 2000.”

Yemeni authorities took Al-Badawi into custody in December 2000 for his part in the attack, but he escaped from prison in April 2003.

He was again apprehended about one year later, but escaped once more in 2006 when he and other inmates tunneled out of the prison and into an adjacent mosque.

The State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program had at one time offered up to a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

“U.S. Central Command has confirmed that Jamal al-Badawi was killed in a precision strike in Marib governate on Jan. 1, 2019.

“Jamal al-Badawi was a legacy al Qaeda operative in Yemen involved in the USS Cole bombing. U.S. forces confirmed the results of the strike following a deliberate assessment process."

Former FBI agent Ali Soufan was the lead investigator on the USS Cole attack. He told NPR that despite the president's characterization of al-Badawi as the "leader" of the Cole attack, he was not actually the mastermind behind the bombing.

"He was the logistical guy on the ground," said Soufan. "The coordinator and the main planner of the attack, Abd al-Nashiri, is still alive in Guantanamo Bay. Every time someone says Badawi was the mastermind, they're hurting the case against Nashiri."

It was 22 years ago today that the music world lost John Denver. His birth name was Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. and he was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the decade and one of its best-selling artists. Throughout his life, Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed, with total sales of over 33 million. he also starred in many TV specials and in movies.
He recorded and performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, his enthusiasm for music, and his relationship trials. Denver's music appeared on a variety of charts, including country and western, the Billboard Hot 100, and adult contemporary, in all earning him twelve gold and four platinum albums with his signature songs "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Annie's Song", "Rocky Mountain High", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", and "Sunshine on My Shoulders".
On October 12, 1997, Denver was killed when his experimental Rutan Long-EZ plane, aircraft registration number N555JD, crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California, while making a series of touch-and-go landings at the nearby Monterey Peninsula Airport. Denver was the only occupant of the aircraft. The crash badly disfigured Denver's head and body, making identification impossible by dental records, so records of his fingerprints were used to confirm that the fallen pilot was indeed the singer.
John had over 2,700 hours of experience, and had pilot license ratings for single-engine land and sea, multi-engine land, glider, and instrument. He also held a type rating in his Learjet. He had recently purchased the Long-EZ aircraft and had taken a half-hour checkout flight with the aircraft the day before the accident.
John was not legally permitted to fly at the time of the accident. In years prior he had had a number of drunk driving arrests. In 1996, nearly a year before the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration had learned that Denver had failed to maintain sobriety by failing to abstain entirely from alcohol, and thus the FAA was compelled to revoke his medical certification. The accident, however, was not influenced by alcohol use, as there was no trace of alcohol or other drugs in Denver's body at autopsy.
Post-accident investigation by the NTSB showed that the leading cause of the accident was Denver's inability to switch fuel tanks during flight. The quantity of fuel had been depleted during the plane's transfer to Monterey and in several brief practice takeoffs and landings performed by Denver at the airport immediately prior to the final flight. His newly purchased experimental Rutan had an unusual fuel selector valve handle configuration. Intended by the plane's designer to be located between the pilot's legs, the fuel selector had instead been placed by the plane's builder behind the left shoulder of the pilot, with the fuel gauge also behind the pilot's seat and thus not visible to the person at the controls. An NTSB interview with the aircraft mechanic servicing Denver's plane revealed that he and Denver had discussed the inaccessibility of the cockpit fuel selector valve handle and its resistance to being turned.
Before the flight, Denver and the mechanic had attempted to extend the reach of the handle, using a pair of Vise-Grip pliers. However, that did not solve the problem, as John could still not reach the handle while strapped into his seat. NTSB investigators' post-accident investigation showed that given the positioning of the fuel selector valves, switching the craft's fuel tanks required a pilot to turn his body 90 degrees to reach the valve. This created a natural tendency to extend one's right foot against the right rudder pedal to support oneself while turning in the seat, causing the aircraft to yaw (move off course) and pitch up.
According to the mechanic, after he had noted to Denver that the fuel sight gauges were visible only to the rear cockpit occupant, Denver asked him about the quantity of fuel shown. The mechanic told Denver that he had "less than half in the right tank and less than a quarter in the left tank". The mechanic then provided Denver with an inspection mirror so that he could look over his shoulder at the fuel sight gauges; the mirror was later recovered in the wreckage. Denver told the mechanic that he would use the autopilot inflight, if necessary, to hold the airplane level while he turned the fuel selector valve. Denver declined an offer to take on additional fuel, telling the mechanic that he would only be flying for about one hour.
The NTSB interviewed 20 witnesses of Denver's last flight; six of them had observed the plane's crash into the ocean near Point Pinos. Four of the witnesses indicated that the airplane was originally heading west; five of them observed the airplane in a steep bank, with four of those five reporting the bank was to the right (north). Twelve witnesses saw the airplane in a steep nose-down descent. Witnesses estimated the plane's height at 350 to 500 feet while heading toward the shoreline. Eight of the witnesses said that they heard a "pop" or "backfire", along with a reduction in the engine noise level just before the airplane descended into the water.
In addition to Denver's failure to refuel the plane prior to takeoff and his subsequent loss of control while attempting to switch fuel tanks, the NTSB determined there were several other key factors that led to the accident. Primary among these was the inadequate transition training on this type of aircraft by the pilot, and the builder's decision to locate the unmarked fuel selector handle in a difficult-to-access location. Following its investigation the board issued recommendations regarding the requirement and enforcement of mandatory training standards for pilots engaged in operating experimental aircraft. The board also emphasized the importance of mandatory ease of access to all controls, including fuel selectors and fuel gauges, in all aircraft.

How rumors get started…..
The story originally started with an article that was published in the student newspaper at the University of Northern Illinois some time earlier. Then, On Oct. 12th of 1969, Tom Zarski, a student at Eastern Michigan University, called WKNR radio in Detroit, MI, and told DJ Russ Gibb on air about the rumor that Paul McCartney died in a car crash, perhaps as long ago as 1966.
Zarski told Gibb that by playing a section of the band's "Revolution 9" backwards, he would hear the words the "Turn me on, dead man." Gibb did it and the to listeners are stunned.
Now be honest hear. How many times have you played a Beatles record, or any record backwards hoping to hear something?
We would imagine that 50 years ago tonight, there were a lot of people in the Detroit area doing just that.

USS United States was a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy and the first of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so United States and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. She was built at Humphrey's shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and launched on 10 May 1797 and immediately began duties with the newly formed United States Navy protecting American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France.

In 1861 United States was in port at Norfolk and was seized and subsequently commissioned into the Confederate States Navy as CSS United States, but was later scuttled by Confederate forces. Union forces raised the scuttled ship, and retained control of the ship until she was broken up in 1865.

By the fall of 1964, The Rolling Stones were one of the hottest bands in the world. The members of the band could have any woman they wanted……… with that said.
On Oct. 14, 1964, The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts decided to forego the advice of management and marry the woman of his dreams, Shirley Ann Shepherd.
That was 55 years ago today…… He made the right decision… They are still married today.
Happy 55th Wedding Anniversary to Mr. & Mrs Charles Watts!!!!!
