The global political unrest is the result of the rapid mixing of peoples and cultures in an unprecedented way in human history. America had these seeds of division historically and was to a certain extent predisposed towards xenophobia, because there is a pretty good overlap between the people, who hold traditionally racist views and the more recent expansion to include fucking near everybody else, it spirals downward. Racism is now recognized as a serious national security threat and a source of terrorism and will be vigorously addressed by policy. The government has no choice in a modern multicultural society, folks don't come by boat any more and haven't for quite some time. The mixing pot is becoming more multicultural as immigrants can travel back home for weddings and visits, the internet allows them to enjoy their language and culture here too. If a modern multicultural society is to survive, it needs defenses against such social division, that's the reality of the situation, many won't like the solutions at all...
