The biggest giveaway was leaf texture, the papery look. I zoomed in where I could see the leaf margin on both plants. Perhaps more accurate to describe as chlorosis or it could just be a reflection.

Saw Jesus at one point but couldn't find him again.

I stood in front of the t5 window light and light deprived lettuce for a bit and realized it is not likely the color spectrum but the relative intensity of the sunlight that is causing the stretch.
The light deprived ones are basically under the table getting no window light, and though they do not look healthy, they are not near as stretched.
I suspect they are constantly shifting to the most intense light causing the stretch.

My party cup lettuce is probably doing the best.

But it needs more space that it won't get. I moved a couple to under the Amare, that look pretty good. The black seeded Simpson seems to handle the more intense light better than buttercrunch.

20190510_101954.jpg These at the bottom of the pic are the same age and conditions as the ones above them. Only difference being the soil, it is a bagged seed starting mix that I thought I would give a shot. There is not one seedling variety that even came close to my mix (which contains some of same brand's organic potting soil mix, expanded shale and amended peat). All the starts in that soil are so far behind Ill blprobably bin the lot of them.
Should be ready to harvest soon, the ones under the plants under the Amare are doing really well, but suffering from not enough light due to shade. The party cup ones are doing well but are suffering a bit from too much light.

Spinach, heirloom and hybrid. Why are the bolting?

Left tray, just behind the kale.
Seems less under the more intense light further back but they dont look healthy either.
Kale, swiss chard and romaine seem ok, chard is a bit stretchy.
About 17/10 light cycle, should I have gone with a shorter cycle? They have been the slowest of my veggie starts.

What is a 17/10 light cycle?

What's interesting is that it is much harder to grow food indoors than people think. It is a fun challenge that everyone should take to test their grow skills

Its actually 17.5/6.5 it is the result of me starting to transition my clone veg area to an outdoor light cycle for putting out doors. I stopped changing the time when I scrapped that project. Since these started in that veg cab I just decided to leave them at that schedule. Seems even though lettuce is a cool weather plant not a short day / long day plant, where spinach is a long day plant should have googled befor planting, I thought it was just a cool weather plant.

There are "short day" lettuce varieties if my memory serves correctly

Left to right.
Mixed cob 60W lexan filtered @18in 17/7
Mixed cob 60W lexan filtered red and uv @12in 12/12
Outdoor greenhouse/coldframe (it went over 80 in there a few times, over 100 once)
Amare se350 monos dimmed 50% @36in 11.5/12.5

The amare did a really nice job and I think it and the uv/red supplimented cob made the best lettuce this time. Amare most mass, uv/red best head. If I had managed the intensity of the 17/7 cycle I think it would have been better. Going to see if I can time a fall crop in the cold frame to avoid the heat.

I would like to challenge any and all here on RIU that are growing with cobs to grow a few heads of lettuce under their lights.
Come on guys and gals, I know you have some extra rockwool cubes, rapid rooters, germination mix and all that laying around. Grab yourself a pack of bib or romaine lettuce on your way out of Wally World and sprout a few up so the rest of the growing word can see how well / if cobs are up to task for food production.
Let's just see if cob can do it start to finish :hump:

That's just my game...

I'm throwing together a 6 cob DIY, but don't have anywhere to put it yet. I can put it on some lettuce for that ass.

Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens...
