abortion is legal, sorry

I think the accepted definition of conception is it starts after the sperm hits the target.

Does that mean we now have a human person? I'm not sure, seems a little premature.

Somewhere between conception and birth human characteristics become more pronounced. Pain is felt, but is there cognition? I don't remember any, but that's not the same as saying nothing is there.

I'm usually pretty logical, but there is very little finite in this process that makes me think there is a magic transformation moment. I'm uncertain, but open to others thoughts.
What's your take on this guy's view abt this whole thing?

Being a primate, I guess I have been studying them all my life. But there is a really good NOVA that covers the subject.
The fact they wait to have more kids until the current one is grown is one of the reasons they are in such danger. If they would be more like people, and have some fun, the spit out the kid 9 months later, their numbers would be back in the safe range before long. Not sure if that would give enough time to train them in all it takes to live.

Is he even being honest? Legitimately curious.

"Ur dumb fascination with science and verifiable fact is disgusting to me!"

You realize how weak this argument is, right? Or was it sarcasm?
I don't have an argument. My point is if the very best mothers of all the primates reserve the right to kill their offspring, getting humans to stop it is not going to happen. I don't try to worry so much about what is right and wrong. I just observe what really happens in the world, and go from there. Humans kill lots of babies. Before and after they are born. Laws are not going to change that.

How long have you been training in primate psychology?

Also, may I please see / read some of the several peer reviewed studies that you have conducted into Ape/Human studies that definitively prove any single piece of your claim?

Please and thank you.

You should ask him.

But I agree with him about those Gorilla girls. They never want to have sex and always say, "what if my kid wakes up"?. And don't even think about taking one out to dinner, talking with their mouths full of banana.

Now Bonobos, them bitches like to get down!

Yes, you do. That is why we are having a conversation right now.

You do not possess any qualifications that can legitimize your suppositions. Since when are you an expert in Primate Research?

Please stop.

I don't mean any disrespect beyond the obvious.

In a sense the abortion thing is a discussion of when does an organism become human. It also calls into question when did primates become humans and is that relevant to a discussion about rights?

No, that is a gross over-simplification.

I can respect talking some shit, but lets at least be honest while we are doing it?

If the RIU Politics section was really about political discussions I might say something like.. . . . . .

I'm assuming the original post in this thread was about all the red states going hard right with restrictive abortion laws. {I don't click on most links, so not 100% sure} As most everyone knows, this is an effort to have the law taken to the supreme court, where they hope to chip away at Rowe v Wade. With 45's two additions to the court, they hope they will get some love. I find it interesting that all these GOP run state houses care deeply about unborn children, but don't give a fuck after they are born. . . . . .

But we all know discussion is not what happens here.

Me being an old married man, I don't really have a dog in this fight. I do find it ironic that anyone thinks that human nature {which is animal nature} will be changed by a law. I was just pointing out how our closest cousins are better mothers than we are.

BTW, if qualifications were needed to post in Politics, this section of RIU would go dark.

I'm open to hearing your synopsis of the question. Please proceed...
I'm not even qualified enough to suppose on this shit, man.

Ok. Honest question: Do you believe Roe v. Wade is settled law?

How do you feel abt the gvrnment overturning constitutional law to favor a certain president's opinion via usurping a majority?

Ok, fair enough.Ijust feel the need to qualify peoples opinions with the respect they have earned and deserve.
I respect your take, i just don't think that your opinion should be specified as fact.

What part do you think isn't fact? The 28 day menstrual cycle? The 9 months gestation? Not having kids until the one they have has reached sexual maturity? Or that they will kill their offspring when their life is in danger?

This isn't opinion. It's all stuff taught in high school biology. No need for you to acknowledge it one way or the other.

Slavery used to be "settled law". Shit changes.

A majority can be a usurper too, often very cruelly.

It's the individual that counts, which is why a President has the same right as you or I to control other people...none.

The thing is, you cant state anything you just posted as fact, because you haven't ever done any actual research into Primate/Human studies beyond watching a few HBO documentaries about "Gorillas: They're Almost Totally Like People, Almost, Kind Of!"

I knew you were going to boil this shit down to slavery eventually. Fuck, that is so lazy.

I see knowing answers to the questions below as pertinent to the discussion. Without those answers the discussion remains adrift and opinionated. I don't know the answers. What do you think?

At which point does human life begin ?

At which point did humanity become humanity ?

Does being human carry with it the right to be free from harm from others ?

Does an abortion harm a fetus? Does a fetus parasite / harm a woman?

I didn't boil it down to that. Your claiming I did...is lazy. I used it as a comparative example.

Now try again. Care to critique my thoughts on what the relevant questions are?

So unless you have done the actual research yourself, you can't talk about it? That makes conversations rather limited, no? It's a wonder anyone has anything to say around here.

NOVA airs on PBS Wednesday nights at 9pm eastern time. You should check it out.
