Any Garlic Growers?

Just noticed this section so I thought I'd see if there's anyone else that shares my passion. I've grown russian red (rocambole) for a couple years, got them from my Dad who's grown it for years. Last year I jumped up to just under 1000 head planted (23 varieties from 8 of the families, everything but softnecks). Sadly with my back I had to stick in town this year, so I transplant enough to save my collection (104 assorted varieties, roughly 60 creole's).

Anyone else with a love affair for non-psychoactive stinky plants?

I grow garlic scattered throughout my veggie garden to help keep crawly bugs at bay. Dont even know the name of it -- narrow neck something or other.

Most people are amazed there's more then one type of garlic. I got into collecting them because I love collecting seeds/plants & selling seed garlic is a good revenue stream for a farm. We're looking at moving to northern ontario, which limits the growing season but garlic does well.

I use it way too often.. Have you ever tried black garlic? That's my goal for next year, try fermenting it as they sound delicious.

I have, and also elephant garlic, that stuff is great !

Sadly that's about my extent with garlic except I forgot to buy it today at the market!? This Thread made me remember it, but I still have some left, I never run out

its a local hardneck not sure of name,been replanting it almost 20 yrs does great here in maine

That's really the most important thing, giving them long enough to acclimate to the area.

I use garlic in almost everything I cook. I still have some braids from last year. I was going to get some different varieties to grow but never got around to it. I like planting in the fall and letting them overwinter. I get much larger bulbs that way. Also, don't forget those scapes. They are delicious.

Most of them I plant in the fall & overwinter, transplanting this year was an emergency. The only ones I purposefully planted in the spring were the 2 creoles; Burgundy & Rose de Lautrec. They don't do well in the harsh canadian winter, so I kept them in the fridge & planted this spring. Hopefully I get bigger bulbs, they're usually only an 1" or so. They're delicious though, well worth it.

We love garlic!!! Planted 503 cloves in the fall and 499 came up. Mostly Russian Red. The other stuff had a females name. Susan Delica or something.

When we make popcorn we chop up a few cloves and put it in the melted butter. Yummmmmy!!!

Looks good kkt3, when do you usually harvest? We'd normally be about 6 weeks out but it's anyone's guess how delayed they'll be from transplanting this year.

Never heard of Susan Delicas, do you know which family it is? I grow 6 rocamboles, 4 porcelain & 4 purple stripe, 2 marbled purple stripe, 2 creole's and 1 each of turbans, asiatic & glazed purple stripe. Also have 2 unknown (tibetan & one I collected on Pelee Island that was smuggled into Canada from France). I only transplanted enough for seed though, other then then 55 odd creoles (they don't get big though).

Everyone should grow garlic, it's easy, relatively hardy & you can't beat hardneck varieties for flavour.

We usually harvest in July. The scapes will curl right around and point upwards. What I do is harvest the scapes but leave a few indicators. When they have unwound and pointing upwards again, then it’s time to harvest the bulbs.

You grow quite a few varieties. I don’t know what family it is but can find out.

Last years harvest was the best yet. Large bulbs, some the size of tennis balls. Looking forward to seeing how this years is gonna be. I’ve done 2 foliar sprays with my ewc tea and they are looking great!!

I gotta find out what hardnecks I grow,they grow tons of it down the road where i got it
