Arent LEDs over rated on purpose?

Yes. But it's a gimmick.
They don't take vertical penetration into account at all.
You can grow a foot of even canopy with led. Probably 2 with a really good one.
But anything below that is just the lowest , fluffiest, spindly, wispy crap. I wouldnt even give it the time of day.
Hid it's a little second rate, and popcorn. But is fantastic for hash and edibles. Still smokes alright too, if you don't have colas.
IMHO it's a waste to use primo for hash, and edibles.

IMHO.
Lights are just about a users needs. They're just a tool.
For me led's not the right tool for my purpose.
But some people's needs suit led very well.
It's so subjective.
It shouldn't even really be a debate.

Well originally it was meant to be a comparison against tungsten filiment lamps. Or at least back when cfl and led tech was introduced for in home usage. The grow light industry is almost a joke. It's so blatantly false advertising and cheap hooks to get ill informed people to buy a crap light fixture.

Yeah, there's a ton of garbage being pushed online, but there are also a lot of legitimate LED companies that are making some really nice lights.

Timber, HLG, Amare, Pacific Lighting Concepts, California Light Works, Unit Farm, just to name a few.

Yep.
I started indoors with a viparspectra 900.
While I wouldn't recommend it. It did flower OK.
It was handy just to even have it for all its nuances. Teaches a lot about lighting.
Then the next purchase is a great one.
We wouldn't buy a Ferrari if we didn't know how to drive.

I think this can be misleading though.
Watts is just the penetration.
It's the intensity of the led's up close, that's the problem.
In my opinion. Lightings all about the space. You could grow inside a shoebox with the right led.
Any other lights, forget it. Fire hazard for sure.
It's the intensity, that's important with led.
The intensity fades very fast. Users need to accommodate for this.

Watts are power draw= its the one constant. Saying an led creates a higher W from a lower W draw is false. If its a 200 w LED its a 200w LED its not magically a 600W led.

It's the intensity that's different with each.
Led manufacturers are doing a disservice to their industry by even comparing them to HID in the first place.
They're both completely different.
500watts led = 500watts led.
500watts hid = 500watts hid.
We can't compare them. They're both so, so different.
