Hey I just picked up 4 footer pure uv fixture. I was wondering what distance I can run this at.

Is there any recommendations for a good uv bulb that wont burn my plants. I didnt think about distance from canopy when I bought it my space is height limited.

If your height wasn't a problem I would've suggested to just get a 400 watt 10k MH bulb instead of a fluorescent fixture, a lot cheaper than the UV specific lights with better penetration.

3+ feet above the canopy and only run 3 to 5 minutes per hour

After reading so many posts on how people fried their plants, I chose to get a cycle timer. Same timer you use for a cloning machine. Can set duration of time to come on and how much time for it to be off. I have mine set between 5-10 minutes on and about 50-55 minutes off. Cant do much precision with one of these, but its better than trying to use a standard timer with 15/30 min intervals.

Now, that said, if I was gonna do it all over again today, I'd get a Smart Outlet instead. The kid you can control with your smartphone. I plan to get a Smart Outlet to function as a timer so I can program intervals with better accuracy. Smart Outlets for my ArgoMax Pure UV and 10W 730nm Far Red Floodlights arrive later this week...

I start them at 5 min/hour and increase by 1-2 min each week of flowering so by the end they are getting 15 min per hour.

Hey frankslan!
The manufacturers of these tubes say they are suitable for the reptiles and the plants in the terrarium and produce good growth. Effective UV-B light up to 20", but recommended for use at 12". I've seen people using reptile bulbs on a 12/12 schedule with no signs of burning. But would not try it with the PureAgro. The new Indagro pontons also use UVB and has two bulbs mounted parallel to the length sides.
There are a few vids on youtube about UVB.

Thanks i got the reptile bulb i used it the first grow about 1 or two hours a day seemed to work well. My last grow i skipped it i may try it again im a new grower so i was thinking keep it simple to get a base line. I broke my pureagro one and never used it its just too strong for my tent i
dont have more than 12 inches from canopy to the ceiling

@Moflow those look interesting. I was holding off on the UV LEDs cause of the price. That's why I went with the T5s. I wonder how well those would work? Very interesting. If you try them out, please keep us all updated.

HLG will soon be selling their own custom designed florescent, meant specifically to supplement white phosphor lighting. It will have UVA, UVB, and a bit more. No pictures of spectrum yet, I believe they are awaiting delivery of the prototype. I think that Stephen said he hoped it would be for sale in Jan.

@DrBlaze That's sounds great! Any idea what they are calling it. Trying to find posts about it now. Totally happy with HLG stuff. I just put together some quantum boards...looking like they are gonna rock. If HLG makes a UV T5, I'm down already.

The pure UV bulb is overkill, even in a commercial setting.

These are much better.

Florescent lamps last MUCH longer with fewer on/off cycles. Therefore, matching the lamp's output to the need so the lamp can remain on throughout the day cycle maximises the benefits of lamp longevity.
