Canada Grows to the 4 Plant Limit

Ya ... weed is small fish now... cops have no time for it anymore...
Until next week when they start trying to take down dispensaries, or the following when they announce road side swab procedures, or... it's (legislation for prohibition 2.0) a fucking make work program for cops which I'm sure Blair had a lot to do with. Wouldn't want to have cops protecting the public or anything useful.

A personal observation:
I live in Nova Scotia and according to polls, we along with BC have the highest usage rates in the country, though you'd never know it if you lived here. When you consider that many of the young people in the province have moved away, leaving a disproportionate number of boomer olds farts behind like me, who's smoking (and growing) all the dope?

The government doesn't want competition and will step on them folks, the new (politically connected) licensed dispensaries and commercial growers won't stand for it and the governments lose money. These guys were taking their chances and making lots of cash, ya can't have em or you'd have mayhem. I hope the Gov makes it easy for them and others to operate under the new regime, the people who led the way shouldn't be shoved aside as the big bucks move in.

As for roadside tests, they better have their science straight and match actual impairment to dosage. The current drinking and driving laws are the results of a million challenges by guilty, well off, old farts and the science is very solid. As most here know, a novice smoker and an old hand (or should I say head!) who smokes a lot are completely different when it comes to levels of actual measurable impairment. Roadside test laws could be easily struck down and if it ain't a problem now, I don't see it becoming one, unless booze is involved. Behind the wheel, is the last place most novice or occasion smokers want to be when they're gooned up, this is not booze, it is a different thing. I wish I could get that fucked up that I couldn't drive!, but I wouldn't do it, if I could and I don't think most folks would. Booze is another matter and it's one of the few drugs that affects judgement and literally makes people emotionally retarded.

The disproportionate number of baby boomers ;)

Heat Sinks in Canada
If anybody is selling heatsinks in Canada for a reasonable price, post your link here and let folks know how much things cost with shipping and tax too. If you live in an area where you can get heatsink extrusions for a low cost, you might want to consider going into the mail order heatsink business.

Making Your Own
For those who want to make their own heat sinks, it can be done by using different sizes of low cost locally available C channel aluminum extrusion, with the next size down C channel placed inside the larger one. Drill holes in the larger sizes and use self taping screws every couple of inches to draw them together tight, plan things, so that the screws end up between the COBs (including the holder you'll be using). Make sure to use cheap heat sink paste (ebay) between the C channel sections and that there is good contact between the surfaces. If you start with 4" x 2" structural channel, you can put 3" x 1" C channel inside that and 2" x 1" C channel inside that and so on. C channel extrusions range from $1 to $6/ft depending on the size and profile. Aluminum extrusions can be obtained from a metals super store or supplier and ordered in or bought from a local machine shop or any place that builds trailers and fixes fishing or agricultural equipment. While you're there, ask, they might be able to get actual heatsink extrusions by the foot for a reasonable price, ya never know.

If you make a 2' or 4' long heat sink bar, attach appropriate sized fans with nylon wire ties through holes in the side of the channel and the fan mounting holes, or use screws if you can, or just use dabs of silicone rubber adhesive to mount them to the top of the channel. Mount the fans behind the COBs and have the air blowing down and impinging on the heat sink, if your COBs are spaced 10" apart, so are your fans, don't enclose the top of the bar, but let the air flow freely. You can mount the enclosed drivers on top of the bar too, just take care not to impede air movement too much, or use them to better direct it. Hardware store chains can be used to hang the bar by drilling 4 holes in the outside channel sides and using "s" hooks or screws, just make sure the chains and hooks are up to the job of supporting the weight.

It might be possible to use double sided CPU tape to hold the sections of C channel together also and if this does the job, it would greatly simplify things. Aluminum extrusions can be easily cut using a power saw with a carbide tipped blade. Use safety glasses, as the chips fly and ya wouldn't want one in the eye!

I recently got a kit from RapIdLED and for 4 pin fin heaksinks the total shipping and duties were about 100$ not horrible from what I was expecting. The whole kit for 4 vero 29cs shipped to my door came in under 400$ Canadian. This will be enough to run the vero 29 c's at 1050 for 75w each so roughly 300w of leds for 400 bucks is good.(this includes heatsinks and driver, and cobs)

If you want to be brave and deal with alibaba you can make a fixture for under 150$, this does require some sourcing of products at different places but can be done cheaply.

If looking for materials to build heatsinks source a local metal supply. Home depot, lowes, crappy tire are all a rip off and don't stock thick enough sizes for what you want. I got 6 feet of Aluminum U channel from Metal Super Markets for 17$. This was 1/8" thick and 1.5" x 1.5" this will used for my Samsung strips. These places will also cut it for you so make sure you bring your sizes with you.

For cutting, I used a jigsaw with a metal blade 21 tpi for a minimum and lubricate the blade, I used wd40 but wax would be better.

Thanks for the input, I'm sure some who come here will like the design, deal and tips. I expect lots of newbies will soon come calling on this thread and I figure this might be just what some are looking for. Keep posting, the more who grow, the more powerful we become politically, it will soon be much more open and growers associations can have a powerful political voice. In fact, if they figure they can get high for free, politicians will attend the meetings! ;)

Take some pictures of your rig and post them here as an example for others, include a bit of description text as a caption.

I just posted a great idea for a water cooled light bar design, better than the one I'm currently using and you can mount COB holders with screws and no screw tapping, on this one you can use nuts for COB holders and use good quality paste. Build time is low as is the cost and the construction is easy too. A viable alternative to air cooled COBs for Canadians and a heat saver in winter. It would probably cost less than an air sink version to build, anybody wanna argue.;)

There lots more water cooling info on my thread, including build pics, data and designs. Have a look at this idea for the light bars.

As I've been saying before the election that the suckers fell for to get MiniPET in on his promise to re-legalize pot that we're looking at another decade at least of turmoil and legal actions before anything resembling sanity towards a plant comes out of Ottawa.

I'm not all that happy with the way dispensaries and so-called compassion clubs are pricing their pot. Still basing prices at prohibition levels as the gov't is so what makes them any better. 90% of it is nudge-nudge, wink-wink we're doing a service for poor suffering patients so don't bust us but $12/g for pot no better than I can grow for maybe $2/g is no f'n service. It's BM profiteering plain and simple.

Grow yer own and give it to those in need, lead by example. They might be greedy bastards, but you're not, it's how you live your life that matters, not what you leave behind. Know the difference between greed and need and you'll be ok, we can only change one person at a time and it starts with ourselves. If ya don't like Donald, then don't be like him!;) If you think he's ok, then nobody can help ya! Nice plants by the way, don't think you're dealing with dispensaries, so your concerns must be for others less fortunate. Good show!

I bought a car on this recent trip out to Kelowna and from there drove out to the coast to visit my boys. Stopped at my fave compassion club to say so long to the owner and as I pulled away spotted a hitch hiker across the road with a sign saying Vancouver so picked him up. Old hippy like me but 6 years older at 68 but we had a good ride and I laid an eighth on him when I dropped him off. Lives in Gastown and we got each other's info to hook up next time I get to Van if ever.

Then heading home yesterday I picked up another dude going to Revelstoke and tossed him an eighth for the road when I dropped him off. Smoked a bowl with him before parting ways too.

Then at 2am at a Tim Hortons drive thru in Edson I paid for the guy's coffee behind me. Must of topped up my kharma account because I missed all four deer encounters the rest of the way home. :)

Wife did a good job of caring for my 4 plants while I was gone for 3 weeks and the thrips aren't her fault. I hacked them back before I left and now there are dozens of new cuttings available. Bought 4 new strains to play with too tho aiming to run high CBD strains like three growing now.

3 Crop King 5 packs. Original Skunk, Afghani, and good old Blueberry. 1 - 10 pack of Green Spirit from Jordan of the Islands. All regular seeds so some interesting crosses in my future. I'm thinking Blueberry X Otto#1 = Blotto :D

I need to grow some stuff that the stoners like so I can afford to grow the meds that myself and some friends really want.

For those who know, compassion is essential for individual human happiness. It's one of the reasons I practice, and a heart is one of the things I look for when I teach, even though it is buried under a mountain of pain and suffering, no heart, no hope. Just imagine if people's actions were controlled by compassion instead of fear, greed and anger. Most don't pick up strangers because of fear, but if you practice compassion, you'll have the courage to act and relieve suffering. When we come to the end of our lives, it won't be the fact that we didn't make more money that will bother us, but that we were not more kind to those we shared the journey with.

Was at Tim's myself the other day and bought one of those charity cookies, when I got to the drive thru, I told the lady, "Give it to the guy behind me and tell'em I said, it would look better on his arse than mine!", an act both compassionate and pragmatic.;-)

Keep up the good work, the world needs more like ya, it would be a better place for sure.

The original intention of starting this thread was to share how to information, but I can see the subjects of discussion and sharing will be more far wide ranging, great! I'll pop in with my how to plans and article sections every now and then and when there's enough useful how to info, I'll copy paste into a new Canada grows to the 4 Plant Limit (how to) thread. Start it off with a page or two of of solid info, a how to guide for beginners, before the ball starts rolling. Other daughter threads might be hived off the same Canada Grows name for other subtopics.

As far as I'm concerned, Canadian vendors are welcome here, as long as your helpful, honest and don't spam (the folks who run the site might be able to put your ads on Canadian threads). If yer starting up in this area and are reasonable about it, you'll have my and others full support, as far as I'm concerned a Canadian version of CobKits.com would be great! I know the Canadian COB King is out there somewhere...

Hey! this is my first post on RIU!

I built my cobs array using a mix of Arrow (us seller, free shipping) and Future Electronics.

as for the heatsinks the only place that had them in stock with a fair shipping price is Par Horta, he also offers built arrays and clones for acmpr patients.

I think this thread is an excellent idea and I can't wait to be able to share pics of my current set-up.

Legalization

Saw on the news today the government is forging ahead and are basically telling the provinces and others with concerns to stop bitching and get on board. This bunch ain't stupid enough to prohibit personal production, Trudeau ain't Trump and Bill Blair is only a Jeff Sessions wanna be, but with no real power, I think he'll come around eventually, perhaps if he's staring down a health issue his attitude would change. No sensible adult is gonna argue against protecting kids from bad habits (for them it's a vice) during the time of life when habitual behaviours are established and life patterns are being set. This is something every parent knows and why they try to keep bad influences on their kids at bay. It's more about keeping life options open for the young people than moralizing. Most parents hide pot from their kids, so as to not influence their life choices, drinkers show no such consideration.

We have until what, July 2018 before the laws come into effect but there is talk about some of it not happening at all. The RCMP and local police have told the Government that there is no way they will be ready to regulate laws this soon and they also think allowing people to grow their own will increase the chances of kids getting involved. There are also size restrictions that they haven't announced yet for the 4 plants people may be able to grow. Physical plant size restrictions and yield restrictions.

I grow with a legal medical license so none of this concerns me but I am always interested in what is happening in this country. Ontario has basically said that you can use recreational pot but you will only be buying it from our Government outlets. This basically screws every commercial grower other than the few the Government decides it will allow. It also screws every shop owner who planned on selling recreational pot.

Anyway, as far as getting started for cheap goes, using EB strips is definitely the cheapest. Minimal to no heatsinking required and the strips are dirt cheap with free shipping. No soldering required either. Super simple. Par Horta is a good place to buy prebuilt. He offers competitive pricing and great looking products.

I don't see Canada gaining many new growers. Most people already grow and would merely be growing more openly once (and if ever) they start allowing Canadians to grow 4 small plants. Like someone else said, people are lazy, they will buy it at a shop or dispensary and be happy.

Trudeau addressed these concerns at a news conference today. Once the basic law of the land is changed, it must be done in accordance with the constitution and legal precedent. Any unreasonable laws or restrictions would be struck down by the courts, you can already grow tens of pounds of tobacco per adult in the household (personal production of restricted stuff is covered under the federal excise act) and multiple adults in a household that grows will challenge and win against such a restriction. Likewise, if you can brew beer and wine in your house with kids (or even grow tobacco), then you'd be discriminating against those who grow, any competent lawyer would have a field day with such a case. In many cases the government knows these things already, the people who are against legalization don't. Think thin edge of the wedge, as it becomes more open, commercial interests, growers and users will band together, like every other group in human history and flex their political muscle. People will be always be pushing the envelope of what's possible or profitable and medical research could change (for the better) the entire situation very quickly. In our tradition, if it ain't illegal, then only reasonable restrictions can be applied.

This ain't America, laws have to make sense and before the state can restrict your freedom they must demonstrate the need. Our courts, legal traditions and constitution are different and our government actually responds to the concerns of the citizens. Unlike Americans, we don't use the law to bundgen those we don't like, the courts wouldn't have it.

Right, but unlike tobacco and alcohol, scientists do not know yet how marijuana affects childrens brains in the long term. Which is exactly why there are people saying that home growing will not end up being allowed or it will be delayed for who knows how many years.
To me it's somewhat irrelevant for Canadians. People grow it anyway and any new law restricting or allowing us to grow marijuana is not going to impact our way of life much in either direction. The same people will still keep growing. More people will go through the process of getting a medical license if they don't allow 4 plants. Either way, it won't change our landscape much.
