The old man was a foreman at a large paper mill for many years, was hired within a year or so post-military service. We certainly didn't live like the Rockefellers (eight friggin kids!), but we were't poor and we never wanted for anything. Mom would buy things like canned tuna, soups, and pasta by the case, heh. Also, dad should be commended for essentially feeding HALF of the kids in our neighborhood - damned sponges! The 70s, when working people actually got a paycheck.
Sadly, I was making more as a caretaker's helper (in adjusted dollars, obviously) 25-30 years ago than many fast food/retail workers earn now.
