That sir is a respectable Canebrake there my friend.
I've eaten several diamondbacks & they were really good - just not much meat there.



Moose smokes pretty well (I'm an amateur in that arena) but I'd never sacrifice a scrap of Dall - the stuff is simply too good as steaks and VERY difficult to get.

here, canes are upper elevation, and you can only find them in the mountains.

timbers are the lowland variety. genetically identical, but timbers are light in color and blend into the dead and dry weeds (like bermuda grass). canebrakes are very dark, and tend to hide in crevasses of granite, especially dark granite. same color, other than timbers go light, canes go dark. the difference is elevation.

this is a timber (they are cultivar depending on color, as they are genetically identical) and timbers have black tails.

southern canes are a hybrid of timber/canebrake. true canes are very dark, and prefer upper elevation.
this is a texas canebrake and though it's darker than a timber, it's not as dark as eastern canes.

eastern diamonds and coppers are our problems locally. not many timbers, no canes, no cottons. just kudzu, coppers and diamonds...

My excuse is that I've lived in the GWN long enough to "forget" what some of those angry boogers look like.

And I like it, though a snake bite with quick medical care would be a cake walk compared to this.

Man glad I don't got no poisonous snakes or non of that shit here man biggest predator we have is a 5 6 foot black bear and their friendly most of the time lol although we do have wolves and a high population of coyote

I got a nice 6.5' Black Bear in the interior of AK - skinned it and hung it in the garage prior to butchering, Mrs. GWN comes home & drives into said garage with crazy ass alien looking hairless (human looking) carcass hanging.

I don't believe she has recovered as yet.

Actually mine is a Whitworth in .375.
