I swung by to check on the little seedlings in the woods and oh shit have they grown! The growth spurt i have been waiting for. No camera this time. Ill get a picture next trip. One of them is dead, something ate it. It was one of the two I put in the ground without a cage. I expect some losses so it's all good.

Back at home 8 seedlings have surfaced. 4 AK and 4 PC. One of each left and I'll be at 100% again. Fingers crossed.

Rodger dodger. I feel strongly both ways on the organics and pesticides. I have bought some neem oil. Gonna give it a try. I don't want to smoke something harmful, but I do want to have something to smoke! There's a reason these non organic things exist. They flat out work. You have to be pretty diligent with the neem oils and soaps and what not. I'm definitely not knocking it. I think it's awesome and i respect the natural ways. I'm just not positive I have the time and patience necessary to be "totally" organic. I won't be using "bad shit" on the buds themselves. If I see an outbreak of some spooky crittters kicking ass before flower time...look out! where's the ddt?

I moved the 5 fem AK girls to the holding patch, copying Larry's style. I dug and ammended 2 more holes. These may be the best holes yet. I have found that something is going to come and investigate and dig around in freshly ammended holes. Best to let it sit for a week or two. I think you are pretty safe from curious diggers after the two week mark.

Everything is still alive and well in the bush. 9 of 10 new sprouts have sprung. This leaves me with a total of 18. One eaten, one not germinated. Maybe she's just a slow bitch and maybe that'll mean she's got fat genes.

I try to dig my holes in December, January and February so they can sit a while. Next year I will wait on the time release plant food though. I also try to leave the sections of topsoil intact and put them back over the hole until I transplant. When I put the Slo3 plant in the KP{west} patch this week, I didn't break up the sods like I had on the other holes. I just set them back on top of the hole after I got the plant in. I've never done this before, so I'll be watching to see how it goes. It should help with nosy animals and water retention.

But I always lose a few to rooting animals.

I picked up the sod tip from you earlier and I did just what you are experimenting with. Place sod back on top of hole and it just blends right in. I think it will help with water retention and microbe activity since this layer has the richest amount of organic matter.

I got curious about the seed that hasn't popped up yet so I gently dug around to investigate. After moving just a little soil I found a seed with a tail spiraling around in a half circle that I could see. It was nice and white so I gently covered it back. I think I may find it sprouted above surface tonight.

The stubborn seed didn't make it. Had another plant munched on by a deer. So it looks like I'm down to 17. 8 in the ground, 9 youngsters still in pots. Everything thing is caged now so no more deer problems for a while. The first round of seedlings are on their 3rd node. The second round of seedlings have their first true leaves nicely developed. I had one plant with a small bug problem last weekend. Aphids I think. Sprayed them all with neem oil solution and it seems to have done the trick. Everything is happy and healthy.

I'm going to try my hand at taking cuttings for clones when the AK matures enough.

I got hit by the deer pretty hard this week too. Only two of the six plants in the KP patch hadn't been munched on. I have some old chicken wire, now I just have carry it back to that bunch of woods and cut them to size.

I went to check on a few plants today, I didn't have time to check them all. There have been a few thunderstorms blow thru since I last checked so I was curious. The first spot I came to had 3 potted plants with a chicken wire cage around them. A deer had knocked the staked down cage over which in turn knocked the pots over. One main stem was bent pretty good and the other 2 had a good curl to them as they had adjusted to seek the sun. Next stop was 2 beautiful young plants. Next stop was one bug eaten plant and one healthy. Next stop was another trampled cage and jacked up plant. I'm going to have to get better stakes. I think I'll cut some cane tomorrow to sturdy thinks up a bit. I think I'll also fill my freezer to the brim with venison this fall out of spite.

Does the risk of loss to deer get smaller as the plants get bigger?

When they are bigger, a chomp is not as likely to hurt the plant as much.

I got out and checked on my LL patch today. All three plants were gone. No way to tell if it was the heavy rains, bugs or deer that got them. I'll be keeping mine in the holding ground a little longer to see if that will help.

ya that first few weeks out can be tough on the youngsters:bigjoint:keep cracking larry got plenty of time.

It's just now getting to be time. I should have waited, but just couldn't stand not having seeds in the dirt. About half of what I have put out, {including the BST1 on Thursday} was in early flower, so it was going to be slowed down anyway. Everything should be alright going forward, as far as length of day goes. The CP1's and GV2's I put out this week looked fine, but then they were only about 3 weeks old, so they may still try to twist.

I have at least two that looks like the top one. My best plant last year was CPDA. The DA is for Deer Ate. It was a lot bigger when it got topped by them though. But if there is any leaves at all, the odds are that it will live.

16 plants in the ground. 2 are left with no home yet. I guess I better get to finding them a spot in the near future.

You may know this trick but ill mention it case you dont.

Pass your chicken wire over a smokey fire a few times and let sit for a few hrs. It camouflages the wire and becomes extremely hard to see. The smoke effect wont wash off in rain either.

I was looking at chicken wire at Tractor Supply Co and was shocked at how high it was. So I'll be using what I can find around the farm. All mine comes pre-rusted. Some of it is so pre-rusted, it has holes in it.
