There is no question of whether he was born a Muslim. He was. That's the Islamic tradition.
He said he became a Christian and I tend to believe him. Normally Islam has little tolerance for apostasy, but they cut a little slack to children BORN Muslim who then reject their birthright as adults.
If the Big O were a practicing Muslim as an adult and then converted, he would be considered a full apostate and subject to death.
Another theory is that he is pretending to be a Christian for political reasons. This is the opinion on the Islamic street overseas, where he is called 'Our Crusader.'
The man said he converted and I see no evidence to doubt his sincerity.

One may be considered a Muslim at birth by other Muslims, But in reality, one is born a free spirit and is only corupted by ones surroundings. Religion is not part of the birthing experience, at least not by civilized people.

Agreed. But what you write does not diminish the fact that he is considered a Muslim by birth according to Islam.
What we believe is not relevant. If that is the way Islam interprets it, it is so.
