I don't see a huge deal/anything too inflammatory here. It looks like Congressmen asked the AG for a civil rights investigation into what happened, and in some ways there could technically be justification for one. Once more: If a white kid in Texas did the same thing I highly doubt he'd be arrested. The arrest is what they're probably going to be looking into because I don't think Ahmed was ever formally charged with anything, so he should not have been detained.

This is just the way things work. The police screw up something procedurally they get investigated. It's the same reason why you have DoJ oversight into a lot of police departments that have screwed a lot of things up. For example the DoJ is going to open a investigation into the Chicago PD over the death of Laquan McDonald; the DoJ opened a probe one month after the shooting of Michael Brown into the Ferguson Police Department; and in 2012 the DoJ opened an investigation over the use of force of Albuquerque Police Officers. I'm not putting an opinion out here beyond the first sentence, just stating my observations.

Ahmed broke one of the regulations of the school district and could have potentially caused a large panic, they were right to call the cops.

You're not from the US so I really don't expect you to know how it works, yet here you are commenting about our police procedures. Do I ever tell you how the Garda should act and such? I don't think so even though I've spent a few months in Ireland.

If you "break one of the regulations of the school district," that is grounds for disciplinary action from the school. So, here he could have been suspended/expelled/held at school and no controversy would have erupted. Moreover, if you are arrested i.e. detained and taken to the police station usually what's next is follow up charges. You are not suppose to be held against your will. It's up to the DA at that point whether to pursue those charges, or to drop them. The Federal probe will deal with whether or not he was arrested because of his race, religion, and national origin. They quickly ascertained what he had was not a bomb, nor was it suppose to be a bomb hoax, yet he was still arrested. The family is bringing up charges of wrongful arrest.

Edited to add: Also, he's a minor so he technically cannot be questioned without his parents being there, but the police kept his parents away. He requested his parents to be present during the questioning, but the police denied that request.
