MYTH 4: POOR PEOPLE ARE LAZY.

Why it's not true: In 2004, there was at least one adult with a job in 60 percent of families on food stamps that had both kids and a nondisabled, working-age adult.

Williamson's response: Awfully specific metric. And a lot of those jobs were short-term and part-time. Poor people may not be lazy, but they do not work: There is an average of 0.42 full-time earners per household in the bottom 20 percent income group, and nearly 70 percent of the people in those households are not employed.

Why he's wrong: Lots of poor people work. More than 10 million American workers live in poverty, because their jobs don't pay them enough to get by and/or their employer only offers them part-time hours. Half of all fast-food workers, for example, are forced to rely on public programs like food stamps and Medicaid to supplement meager wages. And lots of poor people are poor because they can't find work, or are not physically able to work. There are three job applicants for every job opening in this economy. Blacks have a 12 percent unemployment rate and Hispanics have an 8 percent jobless rate. A quarter of adults with a disability live in poverty.

MYTH 6: GO TO COLLEGE, GET OUT OF POVERTY.

Why it's not true: In 2012, about 1.1 million people who made less than $25,000 a year, worked full time, and were heads of household had a bachelor's degree.**

Williamson's response: Those five years that two-thirds of single mothers don't spend in relationships with their children's fathers? Don't use them to get women's studies degrees. In any case, 1.1 million is not a very big number, constituting fewer than 1 percent of US households.

Why he's wrong: Here, Williamson both agrees that college isn't necessarily a ticket out of poverty, and then downplays the million-plus Americans with a college degree who are poor.

we can't all rob our way into hypothetical businesses and hypothetical houses, like greendumb.
Notice the parallels between each of the two viewpoints?

I'm convinced the kind of conservatives sharing their opinions on this thread on this issue are legitimately bad people, it doesn't surprise me some of them come from criminal backgrounds (sheskank, SGT). You don't get to hold opinions like theirs through being a decent human being

in an economy like ours which is fueled by aggregate demand (aka consumer spending) to the tune of 70%, a higher minimum wage makes sense not only in terms of keeping full time workers out of public assistance lines, but it also benefits the middle and the upper classes as well.

more people with more money in their pockets means more work for the middle class carpenter, more people spending more money on consumer goods means more profits for people like the rich bastards on my wife's side of the family who import chinese goods for people to buy.

dumb people don't understand this and cling to the GOP dogma that poor people are just intrinsically lazy (all 100 million or so of them) while the "job creators" are our saviors. these people couldn't be further from the truth.

america does best when the bottom is closer to the top, not further away. it's a simple history lesson that dumbasses refuse to grasp.

these people would do well to conform their beliefs to reality and historical facts, rather than trying to contort reality to fit their preconceived dogmatic notions.

Follow the money; this is GOP dogma precisely BECAUSE it benefits only those at the top, 'justifying' the current state of affairs while profiting from it.

Try STEM degrees

College grads, even in STEM fields are finding difficulty justifying the cost of their degrees. They must be lazy fucks I guess..

I think I'll take the word of a couple prize winning economists on the issue of income inequality over some dip shit on a cannabis forum's opinion, you understand
But taking the word of someone who has literally been there and worked their way out it has no idea how it works?

Wasn't you supposed to join the military or something? What happen with that, the idea of having to actually do something scare the shit out of you?

What do you do now? Do work at a fast food restaurant?

Its hilarious that I'm the exact replica of the people you think you are fighting for and you are pissed cause I actually made something of myself while you obviously sit in misery of being broke and maybe even living off of your parents. Am I right?

And then you idiots complain that I did stuff while I was a child in order to eat. This is the reason no one takes your dumbass thread serious.

Yet, I'm the hypocrite? LoL

What field did I graduate in again? Oh yeah, that's right, technology.

Community college isn't that expensive and it provides a start and if people are willing to work for it they can apply for scholarships. I wrote an essay and received an extra 2,200 per semester simply because I put forth the effort. ( It was a technical essay about my chosen field.)

You have no idea what the hell your talking about. Yet you don't want to believe someone who just got done going through it.

There are many things that colleges offer that you are obviously not aware of. One of those things being cooperative education. This is a graded program where you get to work in your chosen field to obtain experience and pay that isn't taxed because it is considered a class. You never have to pay taxes on it and most of the time the pay starts out at 14 dollars an hour. You can also choose how many hours you want to work but they will not allow you to work over 32 since it is about education and all. Oh wait, there's more. You can even do this every single mother fucking semester while in college and even extend your degree date by taking random other classes in order to not get the degree right away so you can continue to make money, pay for school and get an education all at the schools expense.

HOLY SHIT BATMAN!

So lets recap: College offers scholarships and programs that setup the student for success at no cost to the student (No cost meaning grants and other things), yet allowing the student to gain experience in their field of study and that employer has the ability to hire said student after they graduate or the student can move on to other opportunities do to the simple fact that they were able to gain experience in their field. What is even better about this program is the fact that you can begin it after taking 1 of your program courses (usually) and those courses are easy to get into at the very beginning even if you have to take refresher courses. All you have to do is take the initiative to go and speak with the professor and let them know how dedicated you are and you are in.

You and whoever can be mad at me all you want for things I did as a child that I no longer do and have made up for. You can use that fact to attempt to make what I say invalid, but the fact of the matter stands and I have been there and if I can help one person when they read this then I did what I set out to do.

I got paid a living wage today.

How the fuck did that happen?

You'll never be able to answer me with a legitimate response. It would shoot down your whole argument.

No, just the idiots against American ideals and the Constitution
But taking the word of someone who has literally been there and worked their way out it has no idea how it works?
No, I'm sure you have some idea "how it works". Do you think you have a better idea of how income inequality works than two prize winning economists?
Wasn't you supposed to join the military or something? What happen with that, the idea of having to actually do something scare the shit out of you?
Weren't*

No, I wasn't "supposed to" join the military. I was considering the idea, much like an unjustified portion of the male graduating population does when being targeted for military indoctrination.

What do you do now? Do work at a fast food restaurant?
No, I get paid to draw all day, it's awesome!
Its hilarious that I'm the exact replica of the people you think you are fighting for and you are pissed cause I actually made something of myself while you obviously sit in misery of being broke and maybe even living off of your parents. Am I right?
I'm not pissed you made something of yourself, that's awesome! I'm proud of you! I'm glad you're able to live according to your lifestyle! You worked hard to get where you're at and you're helping contribute to the economy.. I mean, as far as you say.. I wouldn't personally take your word for it, but I guess you expect everyone else to, so there's that right..
And then you idiots complain that I did stuff while I was a child in order to eat.
Yeah, again, I'm not criticizing what you did to eat, I'm criticizing what you're condemning others to do to have to eat, Uncle Tom..
Yet, I'm the hypocrite? LoL
Yeah, you are. You judge the poor for your dumbass beliefs that all of them are just lazy fucktards who are just too stupid to know they should go to college or a trade school and get some skillz, I mean, with all that extra fuckin' money they all have.. Totally dismissing the fact that 1% of the population has transferred 93% of the economic gains, all to themselves, while 99% of the population has gained the remaining 7%..

There is no escaping the fact that to defend those numbers you must either not know how any of this shit works or be on team "Fuck over the Middle Class and Poor", because there is no other logical reason to fuck yourself over, unless you're blinded by political affiliation and religious dogma (most of you are, including you)

What field did I graduate in again? Oh yeah, that's right, technology.
I would love to take your word for it...

Awesome! So I guess if community college isn't "that expensive", you totally support an initiative to transfer the extremely small costs of community college onto the taxpayers, right? I mean, shit, since it's so small and all, that just makes perfect sense, right.. RIGHT?
You have no idea what the hell your talking about. Yet you don't want to believe someone who just got done going through it.
I have no idea what I'm talking about, yet you don't want to believe two award winning internationally renowned economists specializing in long-term income inequality....

Shut your slutty fucking mouth.

OMG, you should totally tell everyonez!

It's all about how goddamn lazy people are.. I mean, fuck, if they just fuckin' applied themselves, fuck, they wouldn't be fuckin' poor.. It's fuckin' bullshit, right? They're just lazy.. a lot of em are stupid.. Why don't they just go to college? Go study some shit and get a degree?

Meltdown.

Yes, everyone can do it. Even you, if you wanted to, but you don't. I have faith in people and you are now attempting to point things toward entitlement, which is fucking hilarious cause you are just another white dude with the same opportunities that so many other mixed raced people was able to do right along side me.

These programs exist for every single enrolled college student. I never said people are too stupid to do any of this, you did. I have said I think all people need is the right push and you would know this if you actually read what I wrote.

Way to have an adult conversation. Come on big boy, call me more names with your I get paid to draw all day.

Now allow me to pull a page from your playbook: PROVE IT!

Show me your art that is worth money.

I also have a gallery on this very site of artwork that I have drawn myself, so come on surprise me.
