Those holders are $2.68 from Newark USA. I got 14 from them, the last 4 are in the mail now. They didn't have all of them in stock at first now they have a couple hundred or more. Shipping was around $7 I think maybe more.

I just got these in for the CXB3590. Not easy find even still, at this price.
You can buy them all day for $7.65 on Amazon.

I got these from Newark14 for $2.55 really matters since I will be running around 50 COBs at 50w each by the time I'm done.

The main thing is I can set torque on the screws to get the required but not excessive, hold down force, evenly across the TIM surface.

Little tip I learned recently..

Like supra said there's a strong vacuum going on with the grease..even thermal pad. Don't pry off the cob carelessly whatever you do. The ceramic base can and will crack.
Probably a good idea to slide a single edge razor blade under one side, then, as I lift, I wlll keep pressure on the blade to cut the material off instead of breaking the COB.

The less ham fist fitted, among us, can try other techniques. :)

How did you apply the TIM to the COB?

The Arctic MX I used comes in a large syringe and I was able to put a small bead to form a X from the corners then put a dab at the center. I then tightened the COB evenly by turning each screw in small increments from one to the other. The paste seem to squeeze out on all sides but I haven't removed the COB to check it.
No. :) Of course that will "work" but as you say....does it?

Use blue masking tape and make a stencil. Use a stiff scarper, to lay in a TIM pad.

When it stiffens again you remove the tape (the best stuff, you work the material first, stirring it on a pallet board like you would mix epoxy)

Now for your question, I learned from Peilter Junction ruining :) I need to butter tightly, the back of the ceramic, to fill the tiny air voids. It looks grayish instead of white, but still smooth.

So, now I lay a wet to wet surface by using a tool (butter knife, razor blade ??) to lay down to COB from one edge to the opposite. Hold the start edge with my finger to make sure there is no drift.

Now you know there are no voids. You can see it as you lay down the COB. You push all the air out, and get wet to wet contact.

I bought some idea cob holders for my 3070s and Im having a helluva time trying to install them on the heatsink. I got the keyholeless with ones with my order. They constantly wanna pop out. I dont see how I will be able to smush it down enough to spread the TIM without them popping out. I was thinking they would be less likely to pop out when I have thermal paste on them but I can even get this PK-3 (TIM) I have to stick to the cob. Sticks to my glove great thou. Anybody having the same problems or have a method they wanna share?

Bigger screw head? PK-3 is not an adhesive. And it is best to not be mushing. You can break the cob and/or leave air gaps.

The real way, is you stencil or silkscreen (if producing vol.) I will mask off with Blue Tape and lay an even very thin pad. I let that set up. I add PK-3 to the back of the cob and butter it down tight to fill the tiny air gaps in ceramic. Now I am putting a wet surface against a wet surface, starting at one edge and laying the cob down carefully to push the air out.

Then I will use the holder and a torque wrench to put about 70 pounds of hold down against the TIM. Max is 75, but the more pressure up to that, the better the heat transfer.

Yeah. Its driving me nuts. I believe I figured it out thou. After googling a bunch about applying TIM to CPUs. Im just putting about double the size of a BB dot right in the middle on the heatsink. Then carefully pushing the cob and holder straight down on it. Carefully getting the screws to flush before tighting back and forth a little at a time. After it is secured, I take the cap to my alcohol bottle (its a little bigger than the raised ring that sticks up above the yoke) and press the LED down. Very little TIM comes out the edges. Its prob too much TIM but its working at the moment.

Sorry, dodgy question.., I have a bunch of cxa(3070) with ideal holders and was thinking of ordering some more cobs, cxb (from Jerry) (and have ideal holders spare).

I should replace the ideal holders with solder & used these kb holders ^ to mount KB lenses right? :-) (ie. the only option)??

FYI jerry from kingbright sells the ideal holders and lenses too. He only charges 1$ a piece..the shipping i s expensive, however if you add them on to your cob order you can get them cheap. I just received my cxb3590s 3000k and 4000k ideal holders and lenses. Flat rate of 50$ for shipping and it arrived in original Cree packaging and everything looks great. I'll be firing these badboys up this weekend! I feel like a kid on Christmas, wish me luck!:hump:

For anyone dreading drilling and tapping, but know it has to be done...
Use and over sized drill hole. Similar size to what is recommended for self tapping screws.

Ex
Try a #40 drill bit with a 4-40 tap instead of a #43. There will still be plenty of thread strength and it will save you a tremendous amount of time, effort, and taps. I promise.

WD40 for lube works great.

Have fun.
