I agree that .30-30 is the best short-to-medium range deer caliber there is. Out to 150-200 yards. Low recoil, inexpensive, factory rounds are decent quality, ballistics great for deer, not a mountain-to-mountain shooter like .243, etc. I always liked .30-30.

The problem with .30-30 never was the caliber itself. It was the fact that back in its hey day, it was normally shot out of 5.5 lb Winchester lever action rifles with open sights. And people would shoot at deer and just wound them, and blamed the caliber instead of their light, open-sighted rifles.

Guns are expensive why not keep them in top shape.

Plus ex military are anal about things like that. Dirty guns might fail.

Even in the Air Force we were trained thoroughly. Every one in basic when I was in spent 4 days in armory breaking down, cleaning and refurbishing ARs.

Mine is 35 yrs. old. It works flawlessly and shoots straight every time, it just has a scratch or two or forty on it.

I shot .22-250 a few years ago for coyote/bobcats. Damn the noise. I switched to .223 for varmints. Love the Remington factory ammo for that. Reloads are more accurate, but I hunt in forests, not deserts, so I don't need great accuracy at extreme ranges.

I have a 102 year old Winchester model 12 shotgun that has taken more game than one can imagine. Been used to pry open barb wire fences 10,000 times at least. Made of nickel steel back then. Not a bit of finish left on the receiver. The other old shotgun I still use is a 1898 model 97, also by Winchester. Both shotguns are capable of slam firing 6 shots in under 1 second. They didn't have trigger disconnectors back then so you just keep the trigger pulled and pump them fast as you can. If you do it right, you will have 6 empty hulls in the air before the first touches ground.

.357. watched a guy take out quite a few safari animals with one. Shoots subsonic so its super quiet, other animals don't even run, they just look at the one next to them that all of a sudden fell over dead and wonder WTF.

Does it have a decent trigger? I've got a powerful air gun myself and I love to shoot it, but the trigger severely limits its accuracy.

Yeah, it takes the same Trigger as an AR. I believe it has a Timney in it.

That's why it wasn't banned but now people have been making their own AR-15 pistols. Which is why there is a rule change.

Yeah, good eye. When you pump that model 97 all the insides of the gun come flying out as it cocks and loads the shell. Due to that design, if you choke up on the butt stock, the bolt comes flying out of the back and hits your thumb, really hurts too. They called those shotguns "thumb busters" for good reason.

I think its like 3 pound pull. Its adjustable. Very accurate.

But if I were to get a another it would be a benjimen nitro piston with both .177 and .22 barrels. Crossman makes one with nitro piston and both barrels for around a hundred bucks.

My gamo is spring powered. Its loud. The ones with nitrogen pistons are a little more quiet.


I was looking at gamo silent cat. Thought if it was quiet enough I could shoot squirells while deer hunting .

That Rogue sells for $1400.00. Spendy air gun, then again you can kill a 1000 pound animal with it.

I wonder if a Steel BB shot out of an air gun at 1500 FPS will penetrate body armor.

It might but steel bb will ruin the rifling in the barrel.

I've seen that air rifle in action, it is a total beast. I'd love to own one.

But does it really, and humanely, take down large game? The grain weight of the pellet can't possibly be more than 30 to 50 grains.. (just guessing)
