Young Mother

Hello. I am looking to start and ebb n flow grow by Friday. I wish to take clones of my mother plant. Green Love potion. My plants is little over 6 weeks I believe(ive haven't been very organised in the date I planted)

Ive read mothers should be between 8 - 10 weeks before taking cuttings. The genetics appear good vegged under a 250w cfl she's developing her 11th node and stands at 10 1/2 inches tall.

Has anyone ever taken a cutting from a mother this young. I want to take 20 which would no doubt leave her bear.

Any input appreciated.

I've cloned tops of plants that have been 4 weeks old without issue.

However I doubt you would get 20 viable clones on that plant.

A viable clone IMO has 3 nodes or more.

its plenty developed enough

but when you say mother ? if its a seed plant how do you know its female ? pre flowers .. fem seed ?

if its a clone that came from a female that you have kept as a mother
then you do not need to worry about its size or age as it is as old as the plant it came from when it was taken + its rooting time + its grow time now

It's a fem seed that came free with some herbie seeds I ordered. How many clones do you guys think I could get.

Technically with about 5 days left of growth I thought 20 possible this is however my first attempt.

Thanks for your replies.

Like Jondamon said, a viable clone usually has three nodes. I clone with only two nodes and go straight to my aerocloner.

Either way, you need to clip above a node and still have two for the clone itself so new growth will sprout. Also, you don't want to strip the plant bare either.

I can't tell exactly by those pics, but assuredly you won't get 20 (at least without killing the plant). Why don't you just take the top and a few side clones for now, and set up a perpetual?

On the other hand, if there are 20 viable clippings, you can kill that plant off entirely, and start another mother or two with two of the clones.

I would say wait 2 weeks then you may get like 12 clones. 20 clones is out of the question completely for at least a month. Honestly I doubt there are even 20 shoots.

Well I see the general consensus is 20 clones isnt viable atleast not without killing the plant. Im abit confused about the 20 shoots. (11x 2 = 22 ) perhaps I misunderstood.
Thank for all your responses and suggestions. I'd rather not wait a month to be honest perhaps two weeks wont hurt.

22 shoots with 11 nodes yes.

BUT each of those shoots needs to have 3 nodes on it for it to make a viable clone.

I didnt mean every shoot on the plant, i meant shoots big enough to clone right now. I hope you do wait 2 weeks, it will REALLY pay off.

Im with you J. I was just wandering what PB's reasoning was behind his comment.

Perhaps he hadn't read the all of the thread. Thanks again.

you need to veg the living hell outta that plant if you want 20 or so clones my friend I count 5 possible clones on the plant you have now if you want more veg more.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me to top this plant. I'd say 5 is on the low side. I think another 2 weeks may give me 10-12.

Turns out ive only got HPS bulbs. I have another 250W cfl so ill just double up.

Just a closer pic. Going by what people20140810_133555.jpg 20140810_133555.jpg 20140810_133544.jpg have said I see at this point atleast 10 possible clone sites with 2 nodes. I know your advice is given with good intentions. I wander though does this chanhe anyone's

I've done quite a bit of personal research on just this question. I have a perpetual grow going and need to find strains that clone early and often. I specialize in pure or near-pure indicas because they are the fastest to grow. My results may not match someone else's if the strains are not alike.

My rooted clones are 18-22 inches after 3-4 weeks in dirt vegging. Although these plants are large enough physically to give up clone-size cuttings I don't bother to try to take cuttings so early. But just a week makes a difference. With moms more than 5 weeks old my clone success rate is 90%. Over and over I've taken one prospective mom and taken timed cuttings. Before mom is 4 weeks old virtually no roots. Between 4 and 5 weeks the purer indicas (all non-autos) will root around day 10 in the dome. After moms are 5+ weeks old I'm getting roots from virtually all my clones after 8-10 days in the dome.

Your plant is old enough to throw clones but too young to have side branches large enough to make viable clones. If the side branch/cutting is large enough to show a hole in the middle of the stem -- that's what you want to see. Signifies that the cutting can move water quickly due to the hole. Coming all from the same mom -- the older she is the better chance she will give up healthy clones.

Good luck, BigSteve.
