I used to grow in soil and found that starving them will give them problems such as hermies male/fem and even death but sometime we forget that soil will hold nitrogen and some times perlite will hold low levels of nitogen. I can say from experence that you have to trouble shoot your problems by trying new things. I think that your soil still has trace amounts of nitrogen or it way to hot. The only way you can be sure is that you need to grow in a medium that can be screened. pH meters and TDS meters are making growing a science and soil just dosen't let you see what the roots are doing. You can also check out nemetodes and see what they do to a plant! Hope this helps some what.
