I would cover that hydroton with white poster board or left over panda film, you don't want any light getting in your dwc bucket. 250 until the get 2 sets of true leaves then go to 600. What kind of air pump stones do you have?

6'' round stones per bucket, ill figure something out for covering the clay balls

Can i use black duct tape to cover the hydroton?

I wouldn't you want to keep the light out but you still want air to be able to get in. Don't seal the tops just lay something over them.

P.S. Personally I seldom cover them and have never had a problem.

You also want to keep the roots cool, black absorbs heat, something white will reflect the light (and therefore the radiant heat) back towards the plant

2012 update! Any idea why my leaves are sorta curling on the edges? I think im going to just use silver duct tape for covering the clayballs/black netpot lid, i think its heating my water.

On temp: 79f-80f
Off temp: 69f-70f
Light Cycle: 18-6
PPM:250

there growing now lol....
yeah deff, the leaf curling on the edge is pissing me off though, everything is really stable temp wise, besides the water, either my ppm/temp stick is broken or my water is 77f when lights are warmed up :\

I have never covered mine either.....I have gotten a little bit of green alge growing on top of my clay balls but it doesn't seam to hurt anything...I just let it go.......I didn't know that people covered them up until I found this web site....

if everything is ok with ppm n ph then maybe its too hot or your light might be too close
